Thinking of getting an Exige

Had planned to replace the TypeR with a 22b....but now we're both kinda thinking they're getting a bit dated and not much cheaper...

so had a wee look around some garages today.

I quite fancy an S2 Exige....Adam's quite keen on another porsche...probably a 2000+ 996 carrera 2

Does anyone have any first hand experience of owning or running both of these?

We're looking to spend around £20k I think.

Is there a nack to getting in and out of the exiges? icon_lol.gif

I had a go in the garage and it was quite interesting

I think you would be dissapointed with an exige. Yes they handle very well, its a lotus, however having driven one I found the handling IMO very clinical, un exciting and like it was on rails. This however may suit you. You need to drive one to judge this properly.

They get blue flagged out my way, so its not for me.

I have no experience of Porsches, other than uncle Volter test drives for them and I cannot afford one.

Fee my mate was looking at getting an Exige and he has actually just bought a 2004 996 Carrera 2 [:D]

Was out for a run on Wednesday and it's great, he said the Exige was just too basic and not a very good every day car.

If you could hold off for a 997 that would be better as the servicing is a lot cheaper, and obviously has better interior etc.

Just read that you are only wanting to spend £20k so 996 it is then [:)]

At the moment we're not really wanting to spend much more than £20k

I've got a new job in Aberdeen, so moving back up there in the summer and looking to buy a place up there

I'm just not sure about getting a porsche....I think to get a really nice one you have to spend a lot of money....I'd rather have an Exige for the £20k than a kinda base model porsche....if you know what I mean

dont think the exige is an everyday sort of car but the handlings incredible. havent driven one but ive been in one on an airfield with a btcc driver at the wheel who kept doing daft things to get it to break loose and it was sooo controllable. gave me the second biggest grin of my life [:)

If it was me i would go for the exige, its a must have car before your time is up.

I had a elise for 2 years and i loved it. It was only 160bhp but it went like a rocket,

under 80mpr, so that won't be a prob with the exige.

Best handling car ever, you will not believe how hard you can go round corners in this

wee go cart, but there is always a but, It's a nightmare to live with as a daily driver.

The decision is yours and what ever you go for i am sure you will love it, both very good

cars in their own right. The prob  with  porsche  is  you  have  to  spend  big  money

which i am sure you and Adam will have in the future.

Have fun

Fee, have you considered the vx220 turbo or vxr 220? I've just bought myself a vxr 220, not an Exige but same chassis. Its basicaly a limited edition vx220 turbo, only 65 were made and came with better, seats, wheels, tyres and more importantly bigger turbo, better brakes and suspension. All this makes for the best drive I have ever had. Handling is just sublime, it really does drive like a go-kart. So much grip! Perfomance its quicker than the Exige, 0-60 comes in 4.2s. Very basic inside, not much apart from a very lame heater, stereo and light switches. Another plus point for me is the fact that the engine is so easily tuned. 270bhp is easily reachable. Mine currently is sitting at 220bhp and 300nm, not bad in a car that weighs less than a tonne. Cost wise a new ish vxt can be bought for about £16-18k VXR for about 20 / 21k.

Go for the 22B as its not a common scoob and will turn more heads then a exige or a porsche put together, the classic of all classics  a collectors item imo [H]

My sentiments also Fee, 22B will also hold its value more so than the aforementioned [au] [Y].

I'd recommend popping over to www.scottishelises.com and having a chat with the owners over there. Plenty of free good advice. Many of the guys take part in our KH track days, so if you wanted some pax laps, or perhaps even a test drive, I'm sure there would be a few who will gladly help out [:)].

You can even get supercharged ones using the Honda engine conversion, so getting 300+bhp from something that weighs about 850kg!

They are not getting cheaper as they are the classic of classics. It's like the escort cossie or rs500, very old cars but so sought after ford classics. Buy a 22b and you will not loose much money when the time comes to sell it.

Before i bought the scoob i took out a couple of elise's as i quite fancied one..... finally decided against it as i figured getting up at 6am for work and "climbing" into my car with absolutely no frills would get on my nerves after a while....

For "fun" driving i genuinely doubt it can be beaten.. bout as close to a go-kart as you can get yet still be road legal!

That's the thing....it's not like we really NEED a car....its more something for fun!

I'm not bothered about fancy stereos and leather interior or any of that crap....just something that puts a smile on my face when I'm driving it

22b's are proving quite hard to come across

For a uk one I should imagine thats something of an understatement! Exige are wonderful cars to drive, plus tuning companies are now offering small turbo's for them. Meant to be a blast!
