wilky Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Not content with touching up the paint job in the kitchen, (Quiet in the cheap seats) And with the Mothership and the Millemium Falcon away seeing a man about a dog, I decided to go for a spin in my hire car, a Golf GT TDI. I left Stirling at 2250hrs and headed for Balloch, the roads were dead and all the rivers that criss cross the route were just starting to mist over. The golf only has about 140bhp, but my god the torque is pretty ferocious even for an oil burner. Ive never been a fan of golfs, I find them nose heavy, but this little gem took me from home to balloch in about 20 min. It really is a delight to drive once you get used to using the low down torque and not revving the breasts off of it. I stopped for a coffee at the BP station on the outskirts of Dumbarton, up to Glasgow via the Erskine Bridge then to Kirkintilloch and over the Hill to Carron Bridge and back home. I am a big fan of this wee car now, anyone else driven one, they really are good! However I wish I hadnt drank the coffee. Callum W
scoobyiain Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 My work has them as pool cars. Have driven it a couple of times and have to admit too they are good to drive.
fai17 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 Had a TDI VW before and they are great for commuting. Loads of MPG and no where near as fun to drive as a Scooby.
st3ph3n Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 At my last job they had a fleet of Diesel VAGs - Golfs, Passats, A4, A6 even an A8. Whilst they weren't nearly as exciting as the Subaru they were always more then pleasent. Oodles of torque, decent grip and easy to drive. Perfect for hooning round the A70 on company time.
paddy247 Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 My M8 has owned a Scooby and a Evo 7 GSR in the last 2 years, he did have up untill last week a Golf GTI TDI, this in his opinion is the best comprimise between power and economy, ive been out in it alot with him and the handling is as good if not better than some scoobys I have driven, and as you say Wilky, the low down torque is awsome. On top of all that they are very safe solid and reliable, as he found out last week when sombody decided to slam the brakes on in front of him on a slip road about to join the motorway, he was picking up speed and doing about 55mph, he didnt have time to brake as there was no warning, so as he tryed to sweerve to avoid hiting the fiesta he cought it at a funny angle and pratically cut the car in half, he walked out without a scratch. Both cars are a wright off, but when as his insurance money comes through, he will be buying another one.
Gumball Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 you are a worry. maybe if your at a loose end you could drive to edinburgh for me everyday,
Guest greegsy Posted October 23, 2006 Posted October 23, 2006 I swapped my 2001 gt tdi 130 for my scooby last year . The low down grunt was mental and I loved the fuel economy but didn't rate the handling at all. I was going to keep the golf and get the suspension and brakes uprated then get it remapped but it bugged me that they were so common so I swapped it with a guy from wales who had his scooby advertised on scoobynet looking for a part ex with a golf tdi. He still has the golf and has had it remapped - it is now 197bhp and 292lbs/ft of torque!!! He reckons the fuel economy has improved too. Greegsy
