Airbag problem's

Hi,

I've got an 03 wrx and the passenger airbag module has broken. It's in at a main dealer and they are saying that the part is already on back order in uk and europe, and will have to come from Japan in its own time. Which is fine, but they will not give me my car back, as they say it will be unsafe to drive as the passenger airbag could go off at anytime! They estimate that the part could take up-to 3 to 4 weeks, before it comes into the Uk , and with subaru warranty only paying for a hire car for 5 day it's a bit of a joke! The question I have is, I asked the garage if they could just turn the airbag off and they said you couldn't is this true ?

thanks for any advise.

James.

Firstly welcome mate to the SIDC and CADS....sorry to hear of your trouble.

Im pretty sure you can turn the bag off it just needs de-programming as its the same if you fit aftermarket seats and un plug the connector, but i believe the Subaru UK will not do that as it is against the standardised side of the car and warranty.

I cant believe they are only covering you for 5 days courtesy car as if you have to wait for parts thats their problem surely.

Good luck anyway....Pop along to one of the meets when you get you car sorted.

If Subaru wanted me to leave my car with them for 4 weeks under warranty, i'd be writing a letter to the MD of Subaru UK.  That's unreasonable behaviour to keep the car without an alternative vehicle for the full term.

I wonder if it's in the warranties small print for them to do such a thing, i'm sure it isn't.  It sounds as though it's a common problem too being on back order which again leads me to believe they could have done something more, knowing it's a common problem.

Anyway good luck!

Thanks for the advice, and thanks Lee I think will be sending Peter Kinnaird a few words. The Warranty company will not budge on the 5 day car hire. As they are saying it's a part's issue, and say I should take it up with International Motors. Who say it could be longer than 4 weeks and to get a car of the dealer who don't have any, so I'm going around in circles at the min. It's not good when your self employed and need a car for work, but they don't understand that. When I get the car back I hope to come down to the Unicorn, but it could be December at this rate!

Thanks

James
