thewelsho Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Went out for a short run tonight and chose some single-track farm roads with lots of up and downy bits. Anyhoo, I wasn't holding back and at one point on the way down I heard an almighty thud; bone jarring! I am assuming that this was the suspension (standard WRX MY06) bottoming out. I pulled over at the end of the road and looked under the car. There are no visible signs of damage, not as much as scuff anywhere (not to say I didn't miss any). So, what's the thought, bottoming out not worries, or should I be more concerned? The car seemed to drive as normal when I set off again. Any opinions?
thefastone Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Sounds like you may have just run over something like a rock or a branch or something like that... Ive had scares like that before... and it does worry you and play on your mind after the even.... you cant help wondering...
thewelsho Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 No, defo nothing on the road and it wasn't a feeling of going over anything; I'd have felt that in the steering. On the way down a hump and on getting to the bottom, the car thudded in a bone jarring way! And yeah, does pray on the mind!
bigdavie Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 aye sounds like either the suspension bottomed out or the car did but if there is no damage then you should be fine !! the teins will help !!
ian_rowburrey Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Ye, you probably just bottomed out, iv done it myself. The car is built to take it so i wouldn't worry too much, thats not me saying that you wont eventually damage it mind if you did it regular! You must have been really canning it. Nice one![]
jabbroni Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 It's happened to me before a couple of times out in the Northumberland country side suspension bottoms out when standard springs are on very soft wallowy stuff fitted as standard, uprate springs to either eibach/Prodrive and the car handles a lot better.
AlanG Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 More than likely you'll have hit the bump stops on the struts. Don't know what you have on your year of car whether they are internal or external.
thewelsho Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 Quote More than likely you'll have hit the bump stops on the struts. And that is ok then? I mean no damage done? Thanks guys, mind getting more and more into a state of ease.
AlanG Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Yeah, they are there to stop the pistons from bottoming out and causing damage to the strut. I wouldn't do it all the time tho'!! []
slo2 Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 Bottomed out ! Did that loads of times on me first car (Chevette) untill the wish bone broke and I ended up on top of a wall. Are you getting some practice in for the next "run" ?

thewelsho Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 Quote Youll be needin new tyres soon.......and brake pads........stiffer suspension.......more power........OMG your addicted! Tell me about it! The stiffer suspension is on order []
bigdavie Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 welsho ...... did you go back up thru kilwinning /dalry / beith way ??
thewelsho Posted July 29, 2006 Author Posted July 29, 2006 Quote welsho ...... did you go back up thru kilwinning /dalry / beith way ?? No. Went along the 77 till we got to the Fenwick turn-off. Used part of the old 77, then over the Fenwick moor Road (nowsingle-track), down through Eaglesham, then picked up the last stretch of the new 725.
Gumball Posted July 29, 2006 Posted July 29, 2006 just the struts hitting and compressing fully. DOesnt happen that often but as you say.........theres no damage so its cool.
