STi_Bandit Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 As part of my upgradge package to the engine i was pondering on the idea of getting a larger TMIC, i was wondering if this would be of advantage to me as this xs-power intercooler is not to dear. Does anyone have these fitted? http://www.xs-power.co.uk/shop/product_inf...products_id=177
wrxmania Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 ANDY F does a very good front mount for a very good price. Gav aka Scoobyseller has one on his STI and thiks it is great. Brian []
STi_Bandit Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 Not really wanting a FMIC, was only thinking that possibly a larger TMIC could reduce the charge temps a little more, Not chasing big BHP but only trying to make a fast road car. Martin
st3ph3n Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Can the scoop suck in enough air to adequately cool a bigger TMIC?
wilky Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 Yes it can, but below 110mph, after that on most imprezas the air tends to skip over top of the scoop to a certain degree, this was helped by the redesign of the scoop by making it taller and with a jutting top "lid" a couple of years ago, although its not ideal. Its interesting to note that prodrive left the numberplate on the bumper of gp N cars in years gone by because it was felt that the air bounced off the plate and seemed to be caugfht by the scoop. Weird but true. Hyperflow make a fantastic topmount, its deep and extremely efficient. Higgy had one, as did Robinh20mrv, and the reported difference between this and a FMIC was only 1bhp, but without the fmic lag increase. If you go this route you will need to remove the internal guts of your scoop and form a seal between the intercooler and scoop with foam or spongy material, higgy once again did this to good effect and it might be worth asking him. He recentley sold his hyperflow cooler, I would have put it on my legacy if it had fitted over the two turbos, but it was too big. Callum W
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I went the uprated TMIC route instead of the front mount as i did not want the pipework/ lag issues, the short amount of time i drove it (about 4 hours) b4 it going into hibernation it seemed pretty good. As Andyf mapped it he seemed happy as it was coping well with the power.
rabskyline Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 fmic looks cool as feck too ! there are kits on ebay that are 350-400 all in ! and there isnt much more lag as i have driven a car before and after.
ANDYJDMSTI Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Word of advice about these 350-400 fleabay great deals.......there have been afew people who have got these sort of deals only to find that the kit fitted like a bag of spanners and had to end up ba$tardising their front end. Am not saying you cannot get a good deal but make sure you do your homework. [] Going the tmic route myself i just wanted to try a differing route as opposed to joining the crowd and doing the fmic thingy. Anyway, should only be a a stopgap til i get my other masterplan in action!! [] Also like you say you are not chasing massive bhp so an uprated tmic will see you fine, unless you want a fmic so you can say you have one, when in theory you do not need it. Ta Ta

The fleabay stuff are seriously crap and the fitter will end up charging you more labour to fit the stupid thing so that's why i went for a Greddy FMIC.[]
thefastone Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 I do like your theory, I myself do not have a turbo, but I have to say that When I do get round to getting a turbo model I will more happily have a TMIC than a FMIC, admittedly I dont know the difference to drive them, but from what Ive heard, its the more useable route to take....
