st3ph3n Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 A neighbour's just put petrol in his diesel. Drove about 10 miles with it and it started chugging. He pulled over and turned it off straight away. Obviously it needs drained and checked at best, but is that likely to have knackered the engine or any other components, and for why does it do it.
rabskyline Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 the petrol he put in mixed with the diesel but if its a tiny amount it wouldnt have made any difference to the car but if a lot and he drives it will obviously need drained and bled. petrol is much thinner than diesel and the engines are designed differently. ie diesels rely on pressure to combust the fuel as petrols use electric ! it sshould be ok !
scoobymark Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 my ex boss was filling up his new 40 grand merc then he noticed , he had put 15 quid of petrol in so he paid for the petrol and then filled the rest up with the correct diesel fuel. he had no probs and actually got a bit more miles to the full tank don't think it would be healthy all the time!
simon_mcwilliam Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I did the same a few years ago with my sierra (do not laugh is was young & stupid) same thing happened to me it just started cutting out. So I drained as much as I could out of the tank then filled it with petrol. It was the best thing to happen as it went a lot quicker than it ever did before.
rabskyline Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 a little diesel in petrol helps clean the valves and decokes it slightly but not the way to do it really !

philip_wilson Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Putting Diesel in a petrol car is okay just makes it Smokeyand will only require a tank drain fuel filter change, but its not so good ifyou put petrol in a diesel and run it, due to the temp petrol burns at it cancause all kinds of problems. First thing to do if you put petrol in is try notto run the engine and drain the fuel tank and replace fuel filter and you willbe fine but if it has been run there is a good chance of engine damage. If thecar only travelled a short distance and stopped as soon as it started chuggingthere is a good chance your neighbour will have got away without causing anydamaged but will have a hefty garage bill for draining the fuel system andreplacing the fuel filter. bigdavie Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 aye petrol doesnt have any lubricating qualities so can cause pump damage on newer cars also if it has a cat can do damage to that ! drain it !!
jcscoob Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 Aye, iv done it twice[:$] the first time tenner in the astra didnt drain it and f**ked it ! The second time tenner again in the wee feista van[:$] didnt drive it, scoobykev towed me to the dealer got it drained and flushed out (£80) and good as new !! []
RA Dunk Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 well its one thing i havent managed to do yet , touches wood!! []
oz *sti* Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 me either not done this trick as yet, and fingers crossed I never do. []
markmarkmark Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 You got me worried. Scooby is petrol (obviously) and work Jeep is Diesel. Would not be ion good books if I wrecked it. I thought that the petrol/diesel nozzles and fill up pipe are different sizes. What I mean is that I thought the diesel nozzle is too big to fit in car or vice versa....
philip_wilson Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 My old boss did it all the time with his S Class merc. Iwould get a phone call and told to get my a55 to JW to pick up a filter andtake out to Westhill, and the only thing he was worried about was not beingable to use the petrol for his wife’s car.
spooks Posted July 3, 2006 Posted July 3, 2006 OK if its a newer common rail engine it will defo do damage. The car may appear to be fine for several months but after some time it will cause irrepairable damage to both the injectors and high pressure pump. If you havent driven the car then you can drain the tank and get away with it but its now pretty common for bills of £2.5K+ to replace the ENTIRE fuel system after a wrong fuel fill up. HTH Spooks
st3ph3n Posted July 3, 2006 Author Posted July 3, 2006 Will let everyone know how it went after I find out. EEEEEJIT!
