Petrol in a diesel - what problems?

Recommended Posts

A neighbour's just put petrol in his diesel. Drove about 10 miles with it and it started chugging. He pulled over and turned it off straight away.

Obviously it needs drained and checked at best, but is that likely to have knackered the engine or any other components, and for why does it do it.

the petrol he put in mixed with the diesel but if its a tiny amount it wouldnt have made any difference to the car but if a lot and he drives it will obviously need drained and bled. petrol is much thinner than diesel and the engines are designed differently. ie diesels rely on pressure to combust the fuel as petrols use electric ! it sshould be ok !

my ex boss was filling up his new 40 grand merc then he noticed , he had put 15 quid of petrol in so he paid for the petrol and then filled the rest up with the correct diesel fuel.

he had no probs and actually got a bit more miles to the full tank

don't think it would be healthy all the time!

I did the same a few years ago with my sierra (do not laugh is was young & stupid) same thing happened to me it just started cutting out. So I drained as much as I could out of the tank then filled it with petrol. It was the best thing to happen as it went a lot quicker than it ever did before.

Putting Diesel in a petrol car is okay just makes it Smokey
and will only require a tank drain fuel filter change, but its not so good if
you put petrol in a diesel and run it, due to the temp petrol burns at it can
cause all kinds of problems. First thing to do if you put petrol in is try not
to run the engine and drain the fuel tank and replace fuel filter and you will
be fine but if it has been run there is a good chance of engine damage. If the
car only travelled a short distance and stopped as soon as it started chugging
there is a good chance your neighbour will have got away without causing any
damaged but will have a hefty garage bill for draining the fuel system and
replacing the fuel filter.

aye petrol doesnt have any lubricating qualities so can cause pump damage on newer cars also if it has a cat can do damage to that !

You got me worried.

Scooby is petrol (obviously) and work Jeep is Diesel.  Would not be ion good books if I wrecked it.

I thought that the petrol/diesel nozzles and fill up pipe are different sizes.  What I mean is that I thought the diesel nozzle is too big to fit in car or vice versa....

My old boss did it all the time with his S Class merc. I
would get a phone call and told to get my a55 to JW to pick up a filter and
take out to Westhill, and the only thing he was worried about was not being
able to use the petrol for his wife’s car.

OK if its a newer common rail engine it will defo do damage. The car may appear to be fine for several months but after some time it will cause irrepairable damage to both the injectors and high pressure pump. If you havent driven the car then you can drain the tank and get away with it but its now pretty common for bills of £2.5K+ to replace the ENTIRE fuel system after a wrong fuel fill up.
