Nick555 Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 From Manx radio: A major survey of public opinion is to be carried out in the Isle of Man on an issue which is certain to draw the strongest of responses. Every household is to be asked its views on whether an all-island, national speed limit should be introduced. It would mean the end of the Island's famous de-restricted routes. But according to its supporters a 60 miles-per-hour limit would cut the number of fatal accidents. The latest figures show that of the 39 people who died in road accidents here over the past three years, 30 lost their lives on roads with no limits. Transport Minister Phil Braidwood says although some TT visitors will be disappointed - his priority must be year-round public safety. Is there any organised response to this?
heazille Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Hi Nick, We have had several organised response and protests before. This time it is a form going to everyhouse looking for individual thoughts[:@] Basicly, we think they are doing everything they can to bring it in. Unfortunately it's the driver training at fault, but no one seems to listen to us however all the polls held have always been in our favour so fingers crossed, the transport minister could still just put it in though[] It is election time in November and i would not be surprised to see it just after that when they have 5 years to run!! And as for my No, not common knowledge yet but a couple of guys know that i am probably going to have to sell my scooby due the state of my knees It is now getting painfull to drive any distance for me and i have a Range Rover Sport on route, auto and air suspension etc etc So, that means that anyone called Nick and living on the Isle of Man might just be interested in buying my Reg No NMN 555 When are you over again? And even if (or when[]) the limit comes in, it's the same as where you are now and no doubt you can adjust to our roads easily as it would be very difficult to enforce, whereas we have been driving unlimited and will find the adjustment Much harder Ta Ta Richard
Jimmy Mc Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 This form will go to all the people who know fozzie bear all about the situation and will just say "Yes, we need a speed limit" because that's what the government stats say. It's a load of haddock and they know it. If only they taught people to drive properly. Would one less lesson on 3 point turns and one on effects of camber, surface change, bumps, and weight transfer on handling of a car be that difficult to achieve? They say all these crashes happen in derestricted zones but most are R plate drivers, who have a limit of 50 (supposedly) anyway? If it happens i'm not going to change the way I ride. I'll just be minus a registration plate and take "Jimmy" off the back of my leathers.
heazille Posted April 4, 2006 Posted April 4, 2006 Transport Minister Phil Braidwood says although some TT visitors will be disappointed I'll say!!!![:$] There won't be any Richard

[] Go along the prom to the top end to Parasite city (night club) then keep left up Summerhill (most traffic does that anyway) at the top of summerhill is a roundabout, straight across into the garage (07624482856[]) Ta Ta Richard
Andy S Posted April 9, 2006 Posted April 9, 2006 According to data collated over the last three years (October 2002 to September 2005) 39 motorcyclists have been killed and in the 34 scenarios where responsibility could be allocated 71 per cent rested with the motorcyclists themselves. The majority of fatalities occurred during weekends in summer months, in fine weather and in daylight on rural roads where the speed limit is 60 mph. This is from the Derbyshire police so your figures are no different from Derbyshire with speed limits!!
heazille Posted April 10, 2006 Posted April 10, 2006 Where can i find that report? Think i might put it in with my reply when the form arrives Cheers Richard

Nick555 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Posted April 11, 2006 I've been in contact with Paul Smith of Safe Speed (http://www.safespeed.org.uk/). I understand that he's been on Manx Radio before & regards it as an important issue. Is there a chance that we could organise a response to the government on this?
heazille Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 This time it's just a residents survey, but send me what ever and i will include it I already have some derbyshire police info Ta Ta Richard
grant_morris Posted April 11, 2006 Posted April 11, 2006 Aw gawd...NOT again. [] This makes me one sad panda.
Nick555 Posted April 11, 2006 Author Posted April 11, 2006 STI Man There's not too many panda's around these days.... Richard I don't yet have anything specific to send to you from Paul at Safe Speed, although his web site is full of useful stuff. He is willing to help, but we need to design a campaign to counter the government's line, before the survey arrives. Any campaign needs a resident to head it, as you know the effect that someone from "across" would have on residents. Manx people need to understand the drip feed of speed policy changes that are likely to happen. A 40mph limit, soon turns into a 30mph limit, which is then extended to any road - even with one house near it. Road safety by sound bite will cause more accidents & increase agression on the roads. To make the roads safer we need better driver training & correctly maintained vehicles. My suggestion is that we enlist the help of every car & bike club on the island. Then form a campaign with the help & input from all clubs & advice from Safe Speed. Ooops... there's someone from "across" making suggestions again! [:$]

graeme_stuart Posted April 20, 2006 Posted April 20, 2006 Yes got mine[:@]. 3 multiple choice questions and a space for additional comments, the size of a few stamps.[:@] I want an A4 size space for that. I think it said in small print at the bottom, that there is a longer questionnaire, that can be picked up from somewhere.
dooahhdoo Posted April 24, 2006 Posted April 24, 2006 There is a meeting tonight at the Outback at 7pm to discuss where we go next in the campaign. Did you like the full page in the Courier???

dooahhdoo Posted April 25, 2006 Posted April 25, 2006 No, they have just withdrawn radio advertising. Sh1ts hitting the fan tomorrow though in Tynwald question time with 3 different MHKs asking questions to Phil Braidwood about the propaganda.
