jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 hi guys. right ive wanted an impreza for a long as i care to remember and now decided the time is right to buy my first one. im looking for a classic saloon probably around a 99 model looking to spend around £6500-£7500, preferably mica blue but really after a minter with low miles and fssh. will probably buy a nice standard example and then fit a panel filter and full stainless system including downpipe and de cat. what should i look out for and what exhaust would u recommend, dont want stupid loud just something that amplifies that glorious scooby thrum! thanks in advance.
wilky Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 You have self answered you question! read back what you have just written. My advice would be run with your own instinct. Just because it has a subaru full service history doesnt mean it hasnt been thrashed. If you want spec buy an import. People shy away from them because dealers wont service. there are plenty independent specialists that will. However make sure they have a good name and arnet just dump valve terrorists. I would go for an import but thats me. Downside is you dont know what has happened in japan, however you dont know what has been done to the car here!! You may get a surprise like full forged rods and pistons like a friend recently discovered. You may have your engine die after 3000 miles. An import will need modified to use UK fuel, or you will need booster if you want to drive like you stole it. A uk car will always be safer being run on Super Unleaded. Followe your instinct and if in doubt have it checked out by a garage before you buy it. Hope this helps no doubt others will add. Callum W
jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 cheers mate. wont be buying an import will be a uk model, loads to choose from on autotrader at the moment. whats the best mods for the standard uk model without affecting reliablilty.
col666 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Welcome to impending skintness! I am on my 3rd scoob in 5 years. Good luck in finding a good one! Col.
jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 yeah ive heard horror stories about fuel economy and running costs. are they that bad?? i dont do a lot of miles roughly 100 miles or so a week if that, town driving.
col666 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I havent had many reliability probs but they do drink a lot of go-go juice! Not ideal for town driving either, especially if you have rock hard suspension!
bigbadboab Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Only a suggestion. Not low miles though http://forums.sidc.co.uk/forums/593664/ShowPost.aspx
RA Dunk Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 or how about a pimp my ride scoob http://forums.sidc.co.uk/forums/614966/ShowPost.aspx
gus the bus Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 £20-£30 pounds a week in fuel I would have though especially if your doing town driving. Well worth the money spent tho[] Welcome to the club by the way! The Terzo that Dans got for sale is a cracker (the one the Bigbad boab has pointed out!).........and within your budget. Gus
bigbadboab Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Take your time and you'll get a bargain...............like me[]
jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 yeah the terzo looks nice, but £7500 for age/mileage is a bit steep. not daft on the gold alloys either. had enough of that with my williams.
gus the bus Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Boab, that Silver one we looked @ in Airdrie wasn't a bad one either and in budget!? was it not!?? might still be there!? What about this? Gus
bigbadboab Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 £8795 wi 56000 miles on the clock. FSSH.
gus the bus Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 oops my mistake I though it was c£7500-£7600 my mistake[:$]
wrxmania Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 £8795 wi 56000 miles on the clock. FSSH. Sickeningly cheap for a good car. []
gus the bus Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 I think so too! Its very clean n standard with NO modifications so ideal for some SIDC treatment[]
jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 bug eye!! no no no!!!!!!!!! hate them !!! got to be a classic.
sma01 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 welcome mate.... for that sort of money am sure you will be able to find a nice example, take your time and make sure its the right 1 for you. If you are fitting an exhaust, would definitely go for the blitz on a classic, couple of my mates have them on P1s and they sound awesome.....if you speak to Dunc @ Hypertech on 01324 812212 he will help you with the mods.... scott
paddy247 Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Jamie you seem pretty clued up on the cars m8, but keep an ear out for any piston slap coming from the engine, one of the impreza let downs, along with any other knocking or spurios sounds. look for signs of accident damage ect. Check out the condition of the tyres, discs and pads, and the clutch, becouse to replace all these could easy set you back 1,500 quid plus. Test the car out on the open road, pay attention to the suspension, check them for leaks, this can be another costly thing to take care of, as alot of imprezas are used for fast road/track use. and are hard on the things ive mentioned in this post. Pay attention to how the car comes up on boost also, and to wot it boosts too. this will give you a good indication of how the turbo is doing/perfoming. Under the bonnet look for any signs of oil leaks, rocker covers are quite bad for it as are crank seals, and power stering pump seals/tanks. Check when t/belt was replaced. So welcome to the club m8 and happy hunting for a scooby.
vicki Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Hi Jamie and welcome to the club. I have a silver classic, its an x reg. It is all standard except my pink grille badge [] I will try and post a photo, but I am not good with computers [8-)]
gus the bus Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Jamie, keep your eye on the for sale section too you never know what might come up! Happy hunting! Gus
RA Dunk Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 bug eye!! no no no!!!!!!!!! hate them !!! got to be a classic. nowt wrong wi the classics lol []
2559B Posted February 14, 2006 Posted February 14, 2006 Hi mate ....... welcome !!! Is there a particular model/version of classic that your after ???? There are plenty to choose from ... UK Turbo's , STI's , Terzo's , Catalunya's , Type R's , RA's , RB5's to name a few. There are also some modified versions kicking around which could give you a head-start if you plan to go down the BIG power route. Or keep it standard-ish ..... just depends what you want ? Good Luck , Ally.
jamiewilliams3 Posted February 14, 2006 Author Posted February 14, 2006 if i had the funds i would get a 22b or p1 but unfortunately i am looking for a uk turbo, mint, low miles and preferably standard or with just exhaust/alloys. there is a guy at my work whos in his 40's drives an immaculate reddish blue uk turbo with full prodrive exhaust and it sounds amazing, one owner before him and i would love to get one just like his or even buy his off him if/when he sells. need a bigger car now but want performance so scooby it is!!
