McGoo Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 A few months ago I swapped out the engine on my MY95 WRX as the Big ends had started to go. I now have an EJ20 block sitting here and I am wondering if it is worth repairing. Does anyone know, local or otherwise, anywhere that could regrind the Crankshaft or supply a replacement and if so what kinda cash I'd be expected to pay for this. Many thanks in advance Davie
craig mac Posted October 26, 2005 Posted October 26, 2005 McGoo If local is Aberdeen then i know a firm that would do it for you. Drop me a PM if you are ABZ Craig
wilky Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 I know of two people who have had an EJ20 crank reground and oversized bearings fitted to compensate, and both times its ended in tears. Like everyone here its a big learning curve we are on, it may work for a while, but from what I have seen, especially if you like it on the power side, I would get a new crank, if thats whats needed. Its got something to do with the balance of the flat 4 engine, perhapes someone with a bit more engineering know how could explain better but I would say a new crank would be better. I was going to get my crank ground once a couple of years ago and was told it was not the way ahead. Callum W
the squiggle Posted October 27, 2005 Posted October 27, 2005 Agree with Wilky as the Big End journals are already on the small side as std and any kind of skimming or regrind. The Big End journals are smaller on a Impreza then a Saxo.......... Grant
McGoo Posted October 27, 2005 Author Posted October 27, 2005 @Craig - Sorry, I should have said. Local is GLA not ABZ. Thanks anyway. @Wilky / Grant - Cheers chaps. Looks like I should be looking at a new 'un then. Fortunately its not urgent at the moment. Just deciding if it is worth doing to recoup some of the cash I paid out on the new unit I have by fixing the old one and selling it. Note - it wouldn't be me doing any work as I know next to sod all on anything more than "Technic Lego" and Ford Crossflows which are not too dissimilar Thanks again Davie
