paul_haggerty Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 hi all anyone that drives on the chatham maidstone road just to let u know that altho u have got the main fixed speed camera on the way to chatham u also have ( SPEC ) CAMERAS facing both ways on the maidstone road and catch u from a mile away so be carefull u will c these camers just down from the fixed camera on the middle verge white warrior paul also be alarmed no road angles or any speed camera detectors pick these little beautis up
GTB Limited Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 If these SPECS cameras are active, they should be on the database. RA will pick them up. Also SPECS works out your average, so there needs to be more than 1 camera in the same direction. Mark
j-k Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 Specs cameras are painted yellow and are fitted into normal camera housings with what looks like a light on the side. As GTB mark says, there have to be a pair of them across a set distance to work out your average speed. The cameras you have noticed are probably ANPR Units ...(Automatic Number Plate Recognition).. Basically they scan and log your registration against the national police computer to see if your car is reported as stolen.. Most larger town centres have them now, but you dont always notice them..(unless your in the trade) hope this helps jon
The Daddy Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 maybee some one could do a thing showing what ones are what. i dont know how to tell one from the other.....
Jolly Green Monster Posted August 10, 2005 Posted August 10, 2005 << Specs cameras are painted yellow and are fitted into normal camera housings with what looks like a light on the side. SPECS camera look like a camera with two round barrels mounted either side of it usually on the left hand side with a blue curved pole or they are mounted on motorway overhead sign. You sound to be describing Truvelo camera. Have a look here Daddy. The Truvelo is now usually yellow rather than blue as shown and the Digital SPECS mounting post is often more elaberate than shown. GATSO takes picture of rear of car and is instant speed calc TRUVELO takes picture of front of car and is instant speed calc SPECS records front number plate as you approach first camera, then again when you pass second camera usually a mile apart and calculates average speed.. issues ticket if over the fresh hold. No fixed camera works a mile away, only the mobile cameras/laser/radar do that either mounted in a van of late or hand held etc.. Simon

Simon >> Simon, maybe i didnt explain myself properly, as i stated, the SPECS cameras are in normal camera housings(not the big square boxes)and im sure that legally they have to be painted yellow... The ones on motorway bridges/gantries are ANPR. (normally one lane one camera)You will also notice some traffic cars sitting by the side of the motorway with the mobile ANPR cameras also. There are some motorways using Specs, and the ones ive seen are as you described on the left hand side and you pass three to four over a fixed distance, hence working out your average speed. Specs can also be used in temporary roadworks on the motorways...so its no good speeding up between cameras, cos you will get done anyway..
ScoobySkid Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Noticed some new camera's on M20 on Wrotham Hill tonight, couple of pairs both up and down, spaced a couple of hundred yards apart
PP Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 I suspect the cameras installed on the M20 are for some future roadworks. They are space too frequently and too many of them to be anything else. The ANPRs on the motorway bridges (generally blue) are (were) set out to monitor traffic flow. They can not by law track vehicles specifically or identify the vehicle specifically. so they recognise the plate and then drop the outside two characters off and store it in a database. The system then times how long until it sees the same centre section of a plate elsewhere and calculates the average speed. This is used across many cars so the general speed of flow of traffic on that section of road can be established. Once that is understood, Traffic master and similar systems process and transmit the flow rates to highlight hold ups. They DO have full number plate recognition capability and could be linked to provide total road network coverage 'specs type' monitoring system. Big bother is watching.........
PP Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Sorry, just been on M20. They are SPECS cameras on the big yellow gantries. There are probably 50 observation cameras in addition to the SPECS.
Jolly Green Monster Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 j-k, I think I misunderstood your "in normal camera housing".. I took that as like the normal Gatso housing which isn't what you mean.. I think.. lol Will watch Wrotham hill, I know they have had signs on the down of wrotham hill going coast bound with no fixed cameras for ages.. but they do use the bridges to park a van on with cameras in.. have seen that a few times. Simon
j-k Posted August 11, 2005 Posted August 11, 2005 Simon, probably my faullt for the description. Being a CCTV engineer i just took it for granted that you would all know what i meant by "a normal camera housing" sorry to confuse... jon
