road warrior Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Hi, Anyone got any recommendations for some new front discs and pads for my MY94 JDM WRX? Everything there is standard just now... Cheers John
johnnyr6 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I would go for tarox 10 pots with ceramic discs and pads, yours for the not too unreasonable 3k. or upgrade to a second hand set of four pots from a later car about 200 to 350 quid depending on what your getting, i.e calipers alone or with discs and pads. obviously the prices are rough guestimates. If staying with the 2 pots ferodo ds2500 are supposed to be good, i'm running ebc yellowstuff pads but havn't been out on the track yet so i can't comment on these, ok for the road though (when hot)
sma01 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 if ur just goin for discs and pads, i'd go for DBAs mate, with mintex 1155 pads....
IanJ Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 John, It really depends on what you plan on doing with the car (i.e track days) and what sort of budget you have. The newer 4 pots are definately a good upgrade for occasional track time. They will require 16" wheels though, so cost can mount. If you are serious about track days then AP 6 pots are the way to go (these will need bigger wheels again) For discs and pads, i've heard good things about the DBA discs. I've used tarox and mintex discs with excellent results. Although i have heard of folks having problems with warping of tarox discs under heavy use. For pads Mintex 1144 will give excellent braking under road conditions and some track use as will the Ferrodo DS' pads. Mintex 1155's are better for track use but don't perform as well when cold. Some folks have complained about squealing with mintex pads, this isn't a problem i've had on any of my cars. I think you need to make sure the caliper faces are properly cleaned and make sure you use the rubber anti squeal shims supplied with the pads. While doing the above it's probably a good thing to look at brake fluid. I think as standard your car should be running on DOT4 (my 95 WRX is) This is more than adequate for daily driving and occasional track days. So just get some more DOT4 and flush out the old stuff to make sure it's all nice and clean (brake fluid can retain water over time). However if you want to go tracking a lot then going to DOT5.1 is the recognised way to go. This withstands a higher temperature however it does require that you completely clean out all your brakes lines as DOT4 and 5.1 are not to be mixed. DOT 5.1 will also require changing more often than DOT4. Hope this helps Ian
ormiboy Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 if staying with the 2 pots ferodo ds2500 are supposed to be good,....... i have these pads, they so far seem very good, ive had them on the car for about 500 miles. they are better once they have a bit of heat in them, normal stop start breaking they are hard to tell apart from my old STI pads, but a few minutes into a spirited drive they defo feel like they are doing more work. soon to fire on the braded hoses and the ferrodo dot 5.1 fluid too. cant wait
fraser_drinkwater Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 << if ur just goin for discs and pads, i'd go for DBAs mate, with mintex 1155 pads.... >> Yip this is the setup i have and they are superb.
road warrior Posted May 27, 2005 Author Posted May 27, 2005 Hi folks thanks for the replies, wish i has a spare 3K to upgrade, but my other car's kinda sookt up the funds a bit. Gonna stick with the 2 pots just now, dics and pads only... no track stuff either (yet) Know any suppliers round the Edinburgh/Newcastle area? Or on the web? Cheers the now...
IanJ Posted May 28, 2005 Posted May 28, 2005 AWD in Perth deliver I did see a place advertise on SN from Newcastle but can't remember who they are. AWD are excellent to deal with and competively priced.
Grovit Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Ian - I've bought some 4 pots and Goodridge hoses (not yet fitted to the car though) - have also bought some Motul dot 5.1 fluid - (again not yet applied to the car) - re "flushing out the system" - I assume you mean just thoroughly bleed the brakes as best as humanly possible. Unless there is another way to ensure the system is completely bone dry of dot 4 before putting in the dot 5 - any help / advice on this point would be much appreciated - cheers
IanJ Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Hi, You need to waste a heck of a lot of fluid! Safest way is to find out how much fluid a Scoob takes, Syphon out the resevoir then bleed through the new fluid (all four wheels in turn). There may be a simpler/cheaper way but i've not heard it yet! Ian
IanJ Posted May 31, 2005 Posted May 31, 2005 Just did a quick search and found this and this 2nd article recommends flushing through twice, which is probably best just to be safe!

Grovit Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 Ian - superb limks - nice one cheers - will make every effort to ensure the system is flushed out as much as possible - think I'll aslo maybe run the car for a month or two (it's only used at weekends) and then flush and replace again just to be sure. Have quite often heard conflicting info about dot 4's and 5.1's - I've just bought a load of Motul 5.1 for the car which basically gets used for enthusiastic weekend driving - do you think 5.1 is overkill for this (nb - am intending to go on K/hill at some point this year - but car is not a regular track car by any means).. your thoughts mate....?
IanJ Posted June 1, 2005 Posted June 1, 2005 5.1 will take much more abuse than dot 4 and give you a longer time out playing it is recommended that you change 5.1 at least once a year. Other than that i don't really see a downside (i stick dot 4 in my road cars for less hassle TBH) Ian
