evojkp Posted April 3, 2005 Posted April 3, 2005 All very well, but Optimax does not come out of Innovene. This is refined at the Shell Refinery down south, and transported all over the uk. All the stuff out of Grangemooth is the same. Having been on site there, I'm surprised that every knocklink in the land is not flashing in time to disco inferno!!!
harvey_smith Posted April 4, 2005 Posted April 4, 2005 Most piston engined 'planes in the UK run on AVGAS. This is 102 LL. ie. 102 RON Low Lead. The lead content is far higher than that of road petrol despite the missnomer LL. This fuel is formulated specifically for aviation use with additives to help reduce the possibility of carburettor icing. For identification and testing purposes it has a slight blue dye. Typical power plants of around five litres, flat four produce under 200bhp at around 2,500 rpm. Mogas is used in some 'planes. ie road pump petrol. Civil jets run on JET A1. In the military this is referred to as AVTUR. Basically kerosene with addatives to prevent waxing or solidification at altitude/VERY low temperature.
