Grovit Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 After a thoroughly enjoyable start to the MMR, I had to retrie to the pits with n/side front suspension failure. Have had the wheel off, and there is substantial flex, knocking and movement from the n/side front strut. I'm not 100% sure what it is, but I think it's safe to assume that the strut unit - ie the actual shocker is buggered. In this respect, not quite sure what to do - see if I can get a std replacement strut from Subaru or look towards replacing the entire set up with a shocks and springs kit (I'm sure that it's unwise to replace just one shocker only and that at the very least you need to replace the two on the same axle...?) any suggestions as to: A - what it could be that has actually broken (I realise my explanation of the problem is pretty poor - apologies) B - A reputable diagnosis, supply and fit place in the Glasgow / S Lanarkshire area. C - What kit would be recommended for our delightful pot hole ridden roads. I'm not keen on a coilover kit as I've heard it is far too hard and non compliant for every day road use. Any help would be much appreciated Cheers Chris
drb5 Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 Couldn't tell you by your comments, what exactly is the problem bud, but if you intend on replacing with a stock Subaru item, you SHOULD do the opposite side at the same time. If i were you, i'd be getting a whole new set of coilovers. I think it's Scoobymad that's selling some GAZ ones brand new for about £500!
Grovit Posted March 27, 2005 Author Posted March 27, 2005 Hi David - I thought about replacing same axle shocks - ie 2 at the same time. It's difficult to diagnose the problem, but it rather looks like the unit has collapsed on the inside - there is such excessive movement whilst moving the shock absorber from side to side. I thought coilovers were a bit hardcore for daily use...?
drb5 Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 Sounds like as you describe m8, collapsed on the inside. Coilovers CAN be a TAD hardcore, but the likes of my own are very userfriendly, beit a little noisey(compressing noise and not clunky), but tbh i love em! Not OTT like some, but if you do some good/quick homework, you can come off well. IIRC there's a group buy on KYB shocks in Scoobynet GB's.
wilky Posted March 27, 2005 Posted March 27, 2005 I have cusco coilovers and they are hardcore. You either love them or hate them. If you retain the standard mounts at the top with the rubber etc it does allow a little more give but I have the cusco solid ones and its brutal at times. Im reluctant to sell my STI RA set up because I may revert back to it, but if you go and see George at Torque preformance in Tinkers Lane Motherwell, Im sure he will have something lying around or be able to help and advise as to your next move. Hope you get it fixed. Callum W
