paulc555 Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 At last I've got the back box changed.... what a difference....just want to say thanks to the guys from AWD, purchased a magnex back box from them at Knockhill yesterday.... got it fitted this morning.....cracking note now....... so what should come next? induction kit.....or dump valve.....
wrxmania Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 INDUCTION KIT - NO!! Search on here and scoobynet and you will see almost always they are not goo. Get an STI panel filter. Brian
Sti-04!! Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 Got to admit its a BIG no to the induction kit:s
the squiggle Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 RE:- Induction kits The actual induction kits are not a problem Its the amount of oil they put on it to prevent water ingress in to the engine that is the problem. When i bought my K+N cone filter i plunged it into a bucket of hot water, this removes the oil from the filter then i gave it very light coating of Duck oil. I have had NO problem with MAF contamination RE:- Dump Valves The main problem fitting a aftermarket Vent to Atmosphere dump valve is the ECU has calculated the amount of air that has passed the MAF, when the factory DV operates it expels pressurised gas back into the engine. The ECU will tell the injectors to inject more fuel to keep a healthy Air Fuel Ratio going into the engine When an aftermarket DV opertates it expels the pressurised gas to the atmosphere, the problem is the ECU will still dump fuel into the combustion chamber thinking that there is pressurised air there but it isnt, it has been dumped into the atmosphere, giving a whoosh on throttle lift off The excess fuel that the ECU has injected into the engine now has to places to go, it will either explode in the exhaust manifold/turbo area giving you the popping and banging which is the best case scenario OR RUN DOWN THE CYLINDER BORES CAUSING "BOREWASH". Borewash can cause the cylinder walls to prematurely wear and it will thin your oil dramatically which can knacker the big end bearings If you do fit a VTA dumpvalve then increase the frequency of your oil changes to ensure it is not too thin The loudest VTA is the TurboXS RFL Nothing against dump valves and induction kits just let you know the tech aspect before you purchase and this is coming from somebody who has a K+N kit and NO dump valve fitted what so ever....... Enjoy Grant

Scoobylav Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 Just for the record I have an MY97 fitted with a VTA dump valve and a K&N induction kit. These have been on the car for nearly 2 years without problem. (that i know of ) Ian
paulc555 Posted September 13, 2004 Author Posted September 13, 2004 Andy Thanks mate but I think i would end up on the street if I bought anything else just now...car needed a bit of work, but wooohhhhh got a bill for £1013.00 so any spending for the next 45 years is off....unless you want to buy a wife of course?????
the squiggle Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 Its just your Donald Duck with K+N filters. Some are fine but some are soaked in oil which gets drawn into the MAF, when it coats the MAF it screws the signal to the ECU and in turn it will underfuel the engine If your lucky you will run problem free with a cracking induction roar, if your unlucky the ECU will through a CEL and go into limp home mode and if your luck is really poor then the Air To Fuel mixture will lean out enough to melt the pistons As i said before, i've had a K+N cone filter fitted for 2 years and have no Dumpvalve fitted{Standard or otherwise} and i've never had any problem, but i now run without a MAF due to the GEMS ecu Grant
