51 sec (passenger) lap at Knockhill

I was at knockhill today to get a ride in the Formula hotlaps car. Only £30 for a ride in two seater car loosely based on a F3/F3000.

I was advised to wait until the end of the session when he could really open it up as there would be no other traffic. The driver did a 51 second lap. It was AWESOME! The acceleration felt quick but not mind blowing (maybe 'cos I'm used to the bike). It's in the cornering where it really shines. The g forces in the bendy bits gave me a new found respect for F1 drivers. BRDS driver Graham Brunton told me afterwards he was going as quick as he possibly could. It was all over in a flash (3 laps) but it was well worth the money.

They'll have a race prepped Ferarri 355 in time for next season I think thats the next thing to go for.

Jools,

a well prepared Scoob will lap around 63 seconds, perhaps high 61s if running slicks/suitable tyres and some clean laps. Fastest Scoob lap I've heard of is a low 58, but that was on a very powerful car (400+bhp), running race suspension, slicks, massive brakes etc. 51 seconds is VERY quick indeed, and faster than touring cars etc.

John,

Graham told me he normally does a 52 second lap. He told me he was really going for it because I jokingly said "Don't short shift it and I give me my money's worth".  So he did.

Now I know why F1 drivers have such well developed neck muscles.

Now John, Hope your remembering the rules for the track days.

No timing of cars.

61 or 62 seconds is my normal for a JDM STi with moulded slicks and some clear track.

Last year, the interior was stripped and a lightweight bucket seat was fitted - lost about 50kg.

Result, a 60 second lap.

My old UK turbo with PPP was 64 secs with full slicks not moulded.

And the EVO 6 was also 64 secs, but with road tyres.

Slicks, I'd say give you 2-3 secs per lap.

Of course, you need to work all this out from a video camera !!!!!!!!

David,

I remember RobD doing the same with the video set up in his RB5 and then the Sti7 as well. Could not remember the times...

Need a sharp price face-icon-small-wink.gif for a 02 rally style rear spoiler for the Sti; the one that hangs over the boot lid slightly. Does it come with a brake light or do you fit the OEM one from the as fitted spoiler? Can you EM or PM me please. You going to the SIDC track day...I'm still offshore so won't be there myself face-icon-small-sad.gif

David,

I'm well aware that there is no timing of laps permitted. However, there's nothing we can do to stop people timing cars from the side of the track, or even on in-car cameras, and looking at the results afterwards face-icon-small-wink.gif

Truth be told, as long as people don't go bragging about it, and it starts getting competitive (and hence potentially dangerous), I don't see much wrong in people recording their own times, as it helps them see where they are going wrong, how a different line can let them carry more speed through certain corners etc.

Just a tongue in cheek comment John.

I think some of my laps had been timed on a mobile phone as well.

But it is a good way to compare your driving and mods to the car.

If losing 50kg can gain a second, how much power do you need to gain another second - 20, 30 bhp?

Jools, probably best to give me a call when your back home.

The S7 / S8 spoilers (what was fitted to the bug-eye WRC Cars 2001 / 2002) are available now. These overhang the rear boot, but don't have the 4 upright splitters. But they would leave you with exposed holes from your STi spoiler. But you could get another bootlid, and keep the original one with the spoiler still attached.

The S9 / S10 spoilers from the blob -eye WRC Car 2003 / 2004 won't be finished until after the Winter, these do have the 4 upright splitters, and will cover all bootlid holes. The one on my car was just a trial and not a production version.

Both spoilers are / will be homologated for rally use, and neither have a brake light fitted into them.

If I can remember rightly my I managed 63 secs for the RB5 on road tyres and 61 secs for my Sti with full slicks. face-icon-small-smile.gif

This is before JB got a hold of my car. face-icon-small-happy.gif

51 seconds now that is quick, whats the lap record round KN is the Footwork F1 car around 48 secs??
