johnnyr6 Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 Looking for some advice.. Whilst driving along my local backroad today i lost my power steering, after crawling home i found out that the power steering drivebelt was missing. The crankshaft pulley was also slack so the belt either slipped off or snapped. Anyone else had a similar problem? Is there anything i should look out for? or is it just a case of tightening the pulley and fitting a new belt? There were no other probs, power was fine (albeit at low revs) and there is no strange rattles from the engine. I heard that a slack crank pulley can warp the crank is this true? Any info welcome.. Johnny
CAZ1562 Posted July 3, 2004 Posted July 3, 2004 Hi Johnny, This sounds quite concerning to think the pulley is slack and you lost the drivebelt. Has the car had any recent maintenance which would involve the removal of the crank pulley (ie - timing belt or oil pump replacement ?) Hopefully you'll get it sorted.
johnnyr6 Posted July 3, 2004 Author Posted July 3, 2004 HI mate, the timing belt was changed last year so i s'pose it could have gradually slackened off if it wasn't tightened properly. Anyway took the pulley off today and the crank seems fine, a little wear on the woodruff key and some marks on the pulley so i've ordered a set of performance alloy pulleys fron graham goode inc new belts.
CAZ1562 Posted July 4, 2004 Posted July 4, 2004 Thats what I done last year. Wait till you feel the weight difference especially on the crank pulley. You also need to use a hammer ratchet to remove the alternator pulley otherwise you'll wreck the internals trying to lock the spindle.
CAZ1562 Posted July 5, 2004 Posted July 5, 2004 its like an impact gun. I took my alternator to the local Auto Electrical workshop who removed it FOC
johnnyr6 Posted July 7, 2004 Author Posted July 7, 2004 Cheers m8, i was just gonna use the belt to lock it.
p1ggm Posted July 7, 2004 Posted July 7, 2004 Think you should use some threadlock when you put it back together, just incase
johnnyr6 Posted July 11, 2004 Author Posted July 11, 2004 OK Derek, i need your help. every time i try to set up the timing belt when i tension it it pulls the tdc marks out of alignment. Am i doing something wrong?
CAZ1562 Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 What we found was prior to applying the tension, make sure the timing marks are lined up on the RHS perfect and on the LHS is at 5 past 3 so that when you apply the tension it pulls the LHS to 3 o clock. What you find is the top cam is bang on its lobe and it has a habit of jumping. LHS - Cyl 2 & 4 on the near side (battery side) RHS - Cyl 1 & 3 on the off side (air filter side)
johnnyr6 Posted July 14, 2004 Author Posted July 14, 2004 Cheers m8, after thinking about it i decided i'm not happy to use it with the slightly worn woodruff key and as i don't have a puller to get the pulley off it's going into the garage (ava) to get sorted.
