P1 bottom end failure

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Guys,

As the title reads my worst nightmare came true on Sunday when my P1 engine gave up on me.

The Engine has been stripped and i am looking for advice on what to do with regards upgrading the failed crankshaft e.t.c as I don't want to have it re-build it with the standard components for it to fail again and somebody else suffer like me in the future.

Also is there anything else worth upgrading during the re-build?

Thanks in advance

Kev

P.S im not looking to build a monster lol

It is worth getting a new standard crank and getting updated rods, pistons, bearings, head bolts and head gaskets. SW motorsport are used by slot of people on here buy your still looking at a £3k bill for a standard and probably £4kish for what mentioned above although it is future prodding in my eyes.

PM me a price you would take for the car as it is if you wish

Personally if I was throwing that sort of cash at a rebuild I wouldn't start with an open deck block. If you're already future proofing I pay the extra for a CDB.

If it was my money and I wasn't building a monster I'd buy a used short block and throw it in, far cheaper.

Find the cause of the original failure though or you'll need to go through it all over again. I'd start with the mapping on a P1.

:iagree:

Cheapest option would be a short block from the newest low mileage car you can find. Plenty newage STI's being broken on scoobynet. Put your own heads on, assuming they are ok, and away you go.

To forge a standard P1 block would be madness. Next option CDB and the best crank, pistons and rods you can afford.

Make the guy an offer on this STi bottom end, get a set of Cosworth head gaskets, new uprated oil pump, new gasket set, timing belt kit and the jobs a good 'un. Including labour, around £2000-2200 has it covered. After that, off to Trackhound Tuning to get a nice new map.

Guys thanks for all your input.

I have actually started to look into a new 2.5 short motor and just waiting to hear back on a price. Could i expect any better performance/reliability with building the rest of the engine "as it was"

Cheers

Performance - yes

It's a bigger engine so will spool quicker and have more power for the same boost.

Reliability - depends

Only if it was a mechanical failure in your last block. If not the same could happen again.

You can't get free software to map the P1. Only Ecutek can access the OE ECU on Sti5, 6, P1 and UK 99/00

cheers
