I don't really get along to the meets, Alastair (bit of a loner that way :tumbleweed:). Might go along to the Falkirk Wheel one again in the summer, mind.

Who supplied your sports cat and how much was it if you don't mind me asking? Is it the type that replaces both cat pipes with a single section?

Cheers again

its a 3" cobrasport sportscat, cost £260 replaces the 2 front cats with a 100 cell sports cat then joins at the centre section..

There a big posts on scoobynet on the problems with the 2.5s

Hawkeyes or hatches with crap maps? It's an important distinction to make!

I've also read plenty of first-hand tales about hatch engines going south because of the faulty map, but none that I can recall about standard hawk STIs or RB320s blowing up, and very few about modded 2.5L hawk STIs falling to bits...

That sounds like a fantastic price, Alasdair. I take it that excludes fitting? Did you fit it yourself?

Oooooh this is becoming very tempting...

P.S. Wonder if I could buy one of them to fit the standard centre section... should be OK as long as it's 3", right?

ifitted it myself was delivered to the house... it goes to standard 2.5 inch so it will fit withe the rest standard exhaust..

I'm guessing the extra power ticks all the right boxes Alastair and now it's time to enjoy what you have rather than pushing the envelope any further?

yip Frank thats me happy,, dont want to over push the engine, it sounds good and feels fast and that will do...

Cheers Alastair!

I am sorely tempted...

even if you dont get one now,at least you know where to go if the cats fail in the car,,,mine moted today with no problems and no need to worry about decat.

But there has been write ups about hawkeye's with headgasket failures aswell. Its not good for likes of yourself who owns a 2.5 to hear all these problems

Do you have any links?

I'm interested in finding out more about this, as you can imagine ;)

Cheers.

Very handy to know for sure that it passes the MOT!

big wow head gasket failures, cant think of any make of car that hasent had a head gasket fail.. you jusat replace with a cosworth one .. i think we should enjoy them while they are running and worry about failures if they happen...or they will sit in the garage not turning a wheel in case lol

Posted (edited)

the mgf had head gasket failure from 6000m and almost every 6000m after...so if a scoob fails every now and then its a better car.. its all chance some will run 100000 no problem others will fail you will never know which on. thats why i say enjoy when running and worry WHEN it breaks..

Was the head skimmed or block checked for being flush because a head gasket does not fail 6k miles then again again.Never had any subaru engine problems in 10 half years and going of owning impreza's well they were and are 2.0L :lol:Both mapped by AFP

go do a google on mgf head gasket failure.. they just had a design problem ,,, hope your touching lots of wood saying never had problems and still going lol....ive had sports cars modded and not for 23 years and not had a head gasket go but bieng a COMMON FAULT in all makes it may happen,,,,

Just posting to say thanks to Alistair Dinnis at Trackhound tuning, he mapped my hawk eye this morning. The mapping process is really interesting and he explains everything in an easy to understand way, taking his time to get everything just right. The car feels much more alive through the revs now, running 1.4 bar with 350ish BHP... :occasion14: Thanks for a great morning, the drive home wasn't bad either. ;)

Hi Alastair thanks for the feedback and great to hear you are happy with the car.

All the best

Alistair

WRC homologation I'd have thought, sure the rules still state they have to use an engine based on a production car? (prob had a load left over after they packed it up too).

Don't take it personally – the 2.0L I'm sure is a great engine, and it sounds like it is built a bit tougher than the 2.5L. I'm just a bit wary of folklore that's repeated around and around on forums about 'chocolate' engines, often based on very little actuality – e.g. "I knew one guy who had a 2.5 blow up"... as if, never in the history of Subaru has a 2.0 turbo engine failed! :D

Watch this, after me defending the 2.5L it'll go up in smoke next time I fire it up :D:blink:

cant be wrc homologation, as theres no wrc programme :(

doesnt bother me, im the worlds biggest sceptic on internet 'advice' i only go on what ive found through experience - after all i ran 2 classics for 5 years with full decats and no remap with no probs, same with thrashing an engine from new making it need oil - nope, not true, running imprezas flat out for prolonged time kills them also not true - an hour at 130+ proved that lol

but back in 2008 i remember being at awd when they had 3 hawkeye sti's in with engine failures, 1 modded but 2 standard

personally the 2.0 suits my driving style as it revs harder and as far as i know the internals are actually stronger on them - 2.0 have uprated pistons and bearings which 2.5's dont

but as you say they can still be tweaked to a fair old level and be reliable - theres far worse engines out there and im sure evo's laugh at our 2.0l efforts

Aye, that's why I mentioned using up all the leftovers ;)

Och, when all said and done, I did some homework before buying my first 2.5L Scooby in 2008. The 2.5L WRX/STI engines had already been already for 2 years at that point, and then — as now — there seem to be very few first-hand accounts of popping engines/pistons/whatever else. On that basis, and especially on the basis of how smoothly/flatly it pulls, I'm very happy owning one. I don't like engines that are all about boost anyway. In fact if Subaru could've crammed a 3.0L in there that'd have suited me nicely ;)

And if you're happy with your 2.0L, then all the better too

I guess I'm just not fond of all these (to me petty) debates that tend to rage on these forums... "classic vs newage", "newage vs hatch", "newage saloon vs hatch saloon", "2.0L vs 2.5L", "JDM vs STI"... baaaaaah – makes me comatose ;)

Did you get your 18" alloys yet Dave? :boldblue:

its all a bit of fun,all cars are good, at the end of the day ive had as much fun in the works clio van as anything - although keeping a golf gti honest through twisties in an audi allroad was highly entertaining :D

18's are sitting in the garage, unfortunately im stretched out flat with back pain :(

and apologies from me too Alastair, Trackhounds getting a lot of very good press - wish he'd been going before i sprung for ecutek!
