Steviestuboy Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 Hi just got my wrx 08 today, was wondering what the best mods are to start with for power, had an sti a few years ago, painted it blue and put carbon fibre bonnet and slot of money it's way and got 5 pages on fast and modified(honest this was cool 5 years ago lol) now I have 3 kids and still need the car driveable for the missus so 260-280 would be a realistic target for my new pride and joy, all the best Stevie Ps car is bog standard except wheels 225 bhp version
Richie Cross Posted October 15, 2010 Posted October 15, 2010 (edited) Hi mate and welcome! Got any pics of the car? Whereabouts are you? Check out the Events section for any local meets Guess you can't go wrong with starting with your exhaust. Full decat or sports cat, panel filter and maybe a wee remap might start things off With the power increase, are you thinking about handling/brake mods? Have a look on www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk which will give you a good guide. Edited October 15, 2010 by Richie Cross
braveheart Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 (edited) TBH with modding I would start with hadeling and brakes , then move onto mabybexhaust and engine mods you will notice a huge diffrent with breaking and a proper geometry set up again all depends on what the car will be used for track daily driver ect..just my experience on what you should start with as I have a slightly modded Suby .. As you said if the missus is driving It think she would benefit from better brakes and geometry, but once you start modding it will bite again, I am a mature man and have 2 kids still love the thrill of some fun however my car is not my daily driver. All the best there will be a few folk here to point you i'n the right direction welcome and get some pics up.. Cheers Chris Edited October 16, 2010 by braveheart
Steviestuboy Posted October 16, 2010 Author Posted October 16, 2010 Thanks for the warm welcome and advice, I have around 750 sitting to start things off I know in modding terms this isn't alot where do I start with this first mod instalment on this budget?
Spaceman Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 brembos off the sti and a exhaust system to release some burble.
Badgerboy Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 As Chris says, start with the brakes! I had an 08 hatch wrx back in 2008 (funnily enough) and the main issue I had was with the terrible standard brakes on the car. IMO not much point in upping the power of that particular car yet, without it being able to stop! Andy
Gumball Posted October 16, 2010 Posted October 16, 2010 £750 £100 fuel pump £150 decat £500 remapped ECU You would get around what you are looking for with this. Then the next £300-400 you come across: 1. Tein or Eibach springs (lowered 30mm) 2. Drop links, bushes, anti sway bar Sorted :waving-santa:
mystery machine Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Welcome I must admit to never having driven a WRX hatch, but as it seems to have a reputation for rather spongy handling I'd suggest the same as others, that you might want to sharpen things up a bit before increasing engine power. A set of lowering springs would be a good start - I'd go for the Eibachs as they're very similar to - if not the same as - the springs that Prodrive used to supply as a dealer-approved mod. Opinion was fairly unanimous that they're an improvement on the standard setup! http://www.just-subaru.com/suspension-hatch-73739-0.html It may also be worth fitting some uprated suspension bushes here and there... someone else might be able to offer advice on exactly which bushes to replace, but Whiteline offer a fairly wide range of uprated parts. http://www.whiteline.com.au/search.php If you're in the Central Belt, then it's worth noting that Hypertech in Bonnybridge (Jap car specialist) can supply and fit Whiteline kit - Duncan senior should be able to advise on how to blow your budget . They'll also fit your springs at a reasonable rate. http://www.hypertechscotland.co.uk/ +1 on improving the brakes, I had a Hawkeye WRX and the brakes really weren't good enough considering the available engine power. Probably worth trying some uprated front pads before binning the discs, calipers, etc... Let us know how you get on!
Richie Cross Posted October 17, 2010 Posted October 17, 2010 Don't listen to them!!! Power!!!!!! I got my car modded to 334bhp/335lbft and then got the brakes upgraded!!!!
Steviestuboy Posted October 19, 2010 Author Posted October 19, 2010 Thanks folks gonna go for a bit of both, hks panel filter and said springs ordered today, looking for discs n pads next then take it from there, my car is on saline motors website still if you want a look it's the 12g black hatchback one, cheers stevie, ps spanked a fortune on my old sti at hypertech Duncan is a great jap car mechanic but the current budget wouldn't go very far in his garage haha
braveheart Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Don't listen to them!!! Power!!!!!! I got my car modded to 334bhp/335lbft and then got the brakes upgraded!!!! Lol I thought you said you went for power Ritchie ha ha
bobbyc Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 Hi & welcome mate all good advice, first thing I did was plant a money tree in the garden cause once you get the bug
scooby222 Posted October 19, 2010 Posted October 19, 2010 welcome along mate, wave goodbye to the holiday fund lol from experience i would say dont bother with discs unless its needing them - none of the discs ive tried have been enough of an upgrade, save up and go straight to better calipers - sti brembo's are a good point. if you want to do something cost effective to them meantime try braided lines and mintex1144 pads, should get both for 100 quid and make a reasonable difference. powerwise, exhaust system either full decat or sports cat, uprated plugs and fuel pump and a remap - Alastair at trackhound tunings getting good reviews and about 250 for a remap i believe hope to see you at a meet somewhere soon cheers Dave
Steviestuboy Posted October 20, 2010 Author Posted October 20, 2010 Project ms Ns zero pads any good? 125 for a set of front pads?
Richie Cross Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Lol I thought you said you went for power Ritchie ha ha Haha . You big power boys!!!!
scooby222 Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Project ms Ns zero pads any good? 125 for a set of front pads? project mu is that? theyve got a very good reputation, especially with the integra boys but i found mintex 1144's as good as any pads and they were 90 quid for sti brembo's so be about 70 for your wrx
Steviestuboy Posted October 21, 2010 Author Posted October 21, 2010 Sound that's good enough for me, mintex it is, needs to wait a month now got a 545 check in the morra!
Richie Cross Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 The new EBC Bluestuff pads are getting good reviews. Apparently really good from cold. Ian Godney is praising them as well. Told me the fronts would be £110. That would be for a 330mm disc so don't know if standard size would be any cheaper.
