Fuel gauge not hitting full

Hi,

Since I got my car I have noticed that when i fill it, it clicks as you would expect. I replace the cap and pay then drive off.

Immediately, I look at the guage and its sitting under the full mark by a few mm.

This actually means that on filling, it can be an 1/8 of a tank down after 3-4 miles.

By the time I got to half a tank today I had done 100 miles.( some extreme boost for a while)

The consumption seems normal by the end of the tank, but that initial period at the top is almost like the thing isnt full.

Any views?

I totally agree. When I fill up the needle does hit the full mark but drops under it very quickly! Maybe after 5 miles its about 1mm under it. Thats with eco driving too. But 1/8th of a tank after 3 miles! Seems a lot. Find that the needle drops quickly with the first quater but always get at least 250 miles to a tank. How many miles you get to a tank?

I think i have filled it 3 times so far and have between 180-230 a tank.

Its above a quarter just now with 120miles done. Some of that has been pedal down, so maybe ill get another 60 miles

yeah 180 odd

Mine is exactly the same. I took it back under warranty and they told me "they all do that"!! Most i've chanced out of a tank is 230 miles and that was on this years Highland Fling weekend!

The fuel gauges in these cars certainly aren't linear - seem to rip through that first 'quarter' and then take twice as long to clear the last bar before 'empty'!

Perhaps the fuel tank is an odd shape... I don't know, but your car's behaviour sounds fairly typical

Are you letting the filler "click" once and hang up the nozzle, or do you continue to fill. When I had the Blob WRX, I could neck it, get 60-70 miles before it would move off of full. Best I managed was 330miles, but the Ex got 350 on a tank, and although it was only a WRX, it did have a PPP kit.

I give it a couple of clicks to get that wee bit more.

Agree with the above- the first quarter stinks but the last quarter lasts longer. Maybe its a mental thing

When I first got my Spec D, the fuel gauge was awful. It would consume the first quarter of the tank in around 14 - 20 miles, but I'd still get 220 - 240 out of a tank. I had the sender unit replaced under warranty, and although not perfect, it's a lot better than the first one.

Typically its around 40 miles for the first 1/4 tank now, and I'm getting around 250 - 260 out of a tank with regular commuting use (all B roads, no dual carriageway or motorways!). I have had over 300 out of a tank, but that was on a long motorway journey, when it was possible to keep a near constant speed for a few hours.

Thing is John, you're getting 40 miles for the first 1/4 of the gauge. Whether that's actually 1/4 of a tank is another matter ;)

Good point. I think I will tape up the gauge and just leave the light showing. That way it wont annoy me anymore

well today i let it click 6 times and guess how much i got before the needle moved to 1/8

1.5 miles

hahahahahhahaa the black nasty is coming out and its getting taped up

Im the opposite! Fill her up, drive easily 30 or 40 miles and it doesnt move. Then drops til I get bout 160 miles for half way, then get between 260 and 300 til its hungry again. Does include m-ways AND spirited driving.

Im getting a bit more now that Ive switched to V-Power from Tesco99, a few tanks ago.
