Rab89 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Hi folks, Is the standard speakers crap in the Hawkeye? Or is it just the head unit driving them poor? Going to get it put into Skidz in Falkirk in the next few weeks and can get a good head unit, new front speakers, an amp and a small sub fitted for about £600. Although if the speakers are actually quite good I might try and save a bit and just replace the head unit myself for now. I don't really want something big, just good sound quality. Wasn't going to go for a sub, but the guys at Skidz said it would be a good thing to go for (10"-12") Any thoughts? Cheers, Rab
mystery machine Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 (edited) Hi Rab. Yes, the standard Impreza stereo system is gash! I replaced the head unit in mine with a JVC item. Only about £90, but a big improvement in sound quality (USB-stick MP3s too). High quality replacement speakers would no doubt improve things further, but I'd suggest that a new head unit will make a bigger difference on its own than replacement speakers... the OEM HU really is that bad! Don't get me wrong - it's not going to sound anywhere as nice as an amp'ed setup, but for a relatively small outlay a HU swap is a big improvement over the standard kit! Halfords supplied my stereo, ariel adaptor and loom adaptor - Skidz supplied the lower tray to cover-up the spare din socket (the JVC stereo is single-din). Edited June 17, 2010 by Mystery Machine

Rab89 Posted June 17, 2010 Author Posted June 17, 2010 Cheers mate, will take a look. Link does work, just seems really slow. Rab
Rab89 Posted June 17, 2010 Author Posted June 17, 2010 Had a quick look around - think I'm just going to go for a head unit just now and if I want more I can go back to Skidz I suppose! Liking the looks of http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/pioneer-deh-5200sd.html although can't find anywhere near me with them in stock and I want it today!
mystery machine Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 think I'm just going to go for a head unit just nowYou're bound to notice a nice improvement in sound quality once you have the new unit installed and have set its EQ.and if I want more I can go back to Skidz I suppose!Indeed!
Spaceman Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 i just changed mine out for a Kenwood double din one with the satnav and stuff its really good and the diff in quality is great think ill eventually replace the door speakers with better ones and that will do me. i got dnx5220bt its dear but i love it and fits perfect in the hawk
scooby222 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 head unit will make a big difference but changing the speakers is definitely worth doing too, skip the amp and sub for just now unless you throw loads of sound deadening at a scoob youl never get top notch sound quality ive got a good headunit, components in the front,6x9's in the rear shelf and a kenwood amp driving them all and its great but still not up to the bose system in my dads audi!
tomwrx08 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 i changed my headunit in my hawkeye for another Kenwood DPX502U. makes a good difference but be warned when doin the speakers, as they are silly sizes in the hawks, i bought spacers from america for mine as the usual autoleads dont fit, unless u want to drill new holes in the door which i didnt, i took mine to soundmaster in barrhead and had to argue with the guy as he didnt believe me when i told him they didnt fit then he tried to tell me i must have an import which i dont, then he found out autoleads havent made any for the hawkeye yet lol http://www.car-speaker-adapters.com/items.php?id=SAK026 ive heard that Corsa 3 spacers are straight fit and u can get them from halfords around £15 hth cheers tom
davey l wrx Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 I changed the speakers in the front of my blobeye a few months ago and couldn't belive the useless crap that came out of the doors. I fitted a set of 16cm vibe components using the Corsa 3 spacers from halfrauds and the difference it's made is unbelievable. The factory fit speakers are held in with 3 screws so a self tapper will be needed for the spacers but they go in easy enough. The std speakers used to be maxed out with the volume on 20, the vibe's are just getting warmed up on 30 Next on my hit list is a new headunit and wiring in the sub thats been in the boot for the last 18 months!
JasonW Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 Surely its the same across the whole newage subaru range? Although to be fair i dont mind the standard set up at the moment if you fiddle about with the bass and treble etc its not too bad, but i will be looking to put in better speakers in the future for sure.
Spaceman Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 gets even bteer if you fiddle with the exhaust system lol
lambourne Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 We just changed the speakers only, and that made a worthwhile improvement, even with keeping the standard head unit. It was about 5 years ago I changed them, but I think it was pioneers I found to be the closest match for size.
kebab nemesis Posted June 18, 2010 Posted June 18, 2010 I changed the headunit and the speakers, all of which were pants. Went for the DNX8220BT and 3 way kenwood speakers, vast improvement in sound quality but still struggle to hear sounds when travelling quick. Sound deadening would improve things but that adds weight, you pays your money and makes your choice.
Rab89 Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 rab skidz give us a discount if asked for kenny Going into Skidz on the 1st! Head unit, front speakers, amp, sub (smaller size). Craig wasn't aware of an SIDC discount though, but he gave me one none the less
