Larry Wood Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Hi I'm fairly new to the Scooby world and loving it everyday I drive it. Im looking at changing the intercooler from the OE top mount to a cool front mounted one. Which is a good kit for a decent price? I seen this on ebay and wondered if it was any good ? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks Larry http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=360264295463

arch Posted May 30, 2010 Posted May 30, 2010 Not all intercoolers are the same although on the outside they may appear the same. The internal construction will determine how they flow, if they are restrictive they will have detrimental effects on the performance of your car- so as is the case with everything in life you get what you pay for. I have found the HDI hybrid kits very good. I think harvey and possibly Bob were doing deals on these kits. Depending on what power you are intending to run then a more cost effective and easier mod would be an upgrade to the larger STI top mount with the scoop and undertray or a modified WRX undertray. Given your car is a WRX I doubt you would want to mod it beyond the levels that the STI top mount intercooler is effective to.

I'm new to the scoobies . thanks
lewisscoob Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 The STI item is larger than the WRX one so it will cool and make the inlet air denser which inturn gives more power. The undertray is a plate on the underside of the bonnet below your scoop that guides/channels the flow of air from the scoop over the intercooler below. If you are going for a larger top mount over front mount you are as well to get the bonnet STI scoop too. Just my 2p worth.
RA Dunk Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 so is the STI top mount still a beneficial increase in power ? You wont get much of an increase in power even with a front mount TBH.
C_WRX Posted June 1, 2010 Posted June 1, 2010 If it is a WRX, not an STi, then going with the STi TMIC would be the way to go as it should handle any power you throw at it until other bits break first. There comes a power point in the WRX where there is a risk to the gearbox and internals. Have a look at KennyUK300, PhilMC and my posts recently for type of mods we've recently done for more power on WRX's and we all now have STi IC's. Also look on Andy Forrests website for power gain ideas. Even the folk with STi's that have over 400bhp still have their IC on. The IC upgrade is a worthwhile change but I'd say more so along with other items being changed at the same time.
