Scooby Wagon Addict Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hi, I've been on the scoob scene for a while but know nothing technical lol! My 05 WRX Wagon is Standard apart from a Prodrive Backbox .. IF I wanted to get a remap for a bit more torque and power could I keep it standard engine and exhaust components? And could I use the existing Subaru ECU? I find the car needs revved up to say 5 or 6k to get that "lightly push u back in ur seat " feeling .. the car runs fine, the turbo pulls fine and engine is sound as it has just had a rebuild. Not had the car that long ..and today has been the 1st day I've given it a good run and a bit dissapointed .. I miss that proper "push u back in ur seat "feeling without thrashing the car ..plus it guzzles petrol so would rather have more low down torque/pull ( if you kno what I mean) Sorry to babble on .. thanks for reading. Steve
seafar99 Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 could be worth your while having a look around here. http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk/58901.html
Scooby Wagon Addict Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Cheers mate .. The famous AndyF Wondered if it was possible without going full decat/Sportscat or changing the filter.. if the PPP on a WRX is just a Remap and downpipe cat removal can someone else do it?
Richie Cross Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 Hi mate, As Seafar says, have a look at Andy's site and you can't go wrong. I've got an 05 WRX wagon as well. It had the PPP on it when I got it. I had asked Andy about a remap without getting anything done and if I remember there wouldn't be huge gains. Think it would drive better though. You can keep standard engine components up to a certain point. I'm at 334bhp/335lbft with standard internals/clutch/gearbox. If you're spending £500 on a remap, it would be worth your while in saving a bit more and either get a full decat/sportscat/uppipe/downpipe etc for a better gain. I waited til I had the bits together and I'm at Stage 3a now. I believe the Subaru ECU is more than capable up to the big power gains. I'm not technically minded so someone better will no doubt be along soon
Scooby Wagon Addict Posted April 9, 2010 Author Posted April 9, 2010 Cheers Richie As I said before I'm not after much ..40/50bhp/lbs ft would do me fine..anything's better lol! Being an old fart my only trouble is I dont want any more exhaust noise ..I had a straight thro centre and TSL backbox but put the Prodrive zorst and OEM centre back on ..if I decat/sports cat it'll be even louder.. hell I'd go silent if I could ..stealth is good IMO .. hence me asking if I could keep my setup ..would add a better Panel Filter if it was necessary
C_WRX Posted April 9, 2010 Posted April 9, 2010 As noted look through the Andy F list. Andy is a when it comes to transforming your cars performance. The more upgrades you can make, certainly at the beginning levels, the better the improvement. I have on my WRX level 1 with some of level 2 and run just shy of 280bhp, notice a difference, not massive compared to some, but it's there. Level 1 260-280 bhp Full Decat or Sportscat exhaust from turbo back 2.5 or 3” bore - the Blob WRX has 3 cats from memory. The more you can get rid of the better come remap time. I have a sportscat in the downpipe for MOT time. Mid-section easiest to replace. Your exhaust mid-section I believe is different to the saloon model?? otherwise I may have been able to help you out there. Ecutek Custom ECU recalibration (similar to PPP) & Twin boost set up for high/low power switchable in-car - this is what AndyF does for you Walbro 255 l/hr uprated fuel pump - believe is more for reliability than performance K+N panel filter - cheap and cheerful change for better breathing May be that someone with power you're interested in lives near by and can take you for a run. Get along to a local meet and sure a friendly sole will help if can. By the way, it isn't going to be cheap !!!
bobbyc Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 Don't want to say too much just now as there is a certain club member with a huge grin after today, minimal mods, intake freeflow kit & a decent unrestrictive exhaust on a standard car many torqueeeeeeeees there will be that famous grin for a long time

It is louder than it was before but not much. More of a rumble/burble I think.....which is a good thing It's a tough one because to get a wee bit more oomph, the obvious place to start is with the car's breathing....which may in turn increase the noise. You can go to the likes of Meercat and C&C who can tailor your exhaust to your needs.
scooby222 Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 going by your post i take it youve no ppp? in which case i would say as above,go to meercat (think fai17 was talking of a group buy there?) or c and c for a sports cat downpipe then straight through system built to your own noise level, green panel filter, walbro 255 fuel pump, silicon boost hose set(optional for peace of mind) and a trip to andy f for an ecutek remap to your existing ecu. id say you d do that for 1000 and see a noticeable difference in both thump and driveability(much less gear changing) and no difference to noise if you so wish believe me the only downside to how tuneable these things are is how much money they can drain!
Scooby Wagon Addict Posted April 10, 2010 Author Posted April 10, 2010 Thanks everyone for your replies .. looks like I'm gonna have to save up bigtime ..or just be greatful with what I've got
Phil MC Posted April 10, 2010 Posted April 10, 2010 (edited) Just buy an item or two a month, then when you've assembled everything get the remap booked with Andy or whoever . If your budget is that tight, then I'd maybe suggest that you lurk around waiting for some 2nd hand bargains to come up on here, scoobynet or even fleabay-(but be careful there). This little lot should see you with typical figures of around 285bhp without mapping too agressively, for around the £800 mark all-in: Classic standard uppipe fits and is catless (£30) Decat/Sportscat downpipe (£80-£120) If you want to keep it quiet then an STi backbox is the way forward (£30) Walbro 255lph fuel pump (Buy new at £60) K&N or Green cotton panel filter (£30-40) Remap initial cost (£500 + vat, or £460 + vat for a typical group buy) These are just rough figures for a cheapest buy option if you find the right bargains. Good luck with whatever you choose to do with your scooby Edited April 10, 2010 by Phil MC
Scooby Wagon Addict Posted April 10, 2010 Author Posted April 10, 2010 Cheers for that .. it doesnt look so bad when its broken down that way .. My insurance renewal is up in May.. suppose it rests on how much that is, probably going with Keith Michaels for future mod-friendliness
