Moving Front Brembo 4-pots To Rear

Recommended Posts

Have tried doing the usual searches and drawn a bit of a blank.

Am aware there's a couple of brake threads on the go at the minute and:

1> Didn't wanna hijack those with this, and

2> Figured the current interest in brakes might throw out a good reponse.

Just wondering if it's possible to re-use the front brembo 4-pots on the back if I was to fit bigger fronts, rather than see the 4-pots go a-begging and "put up with" the 2-pots on the back?

Advice appreciated... if there IS another thread (and I probably HAVE missed it!) a link will suffice, and my apologies for being lazy! *chuckle*

I've no idea if its possible, but you would have to go to something pretty serious on the front to keep things stable under heavy braking I'd have thought.

Clearly anything could be made to fit Glyn with enough effort but my initial reaction as stated above is that they would be too powerful and you would end up locking the rears. Achieving the balance would be key.

Saying that, if you could post your results up by Sunday night that'll let everyone else decide if it's worth it!!!! ;)

Might be worth a chat with Ian Godney of Godspeed, he gave me good advice for my R as V3's are a nightmare to upgrade.

In theory you'd need a fitting kit for the calipers to fit to the backplate and don't know if the discs would be suitable being slightly smaller. As other have said you'd need some serious kit for the front or use a bais control if you can't get something big enough.

Would there not be the option of fitting an after market brake bias vavle to compensate for the larger brakes on the rear?????

;) never read the above post in full.

Yes it can be and has been done.

CRD did it with their Impreza in 2002 when George Smith was their Mechanic. If anyone knows where he is he could give you the whole story.

I think the main problems he had was alignment needs to be spot on when making brackets, if you are even a bawhair out it will effect break wear and performance.

You will also encounter slightly greater pedal travel as well.

Steve Whitson can make brackets for this conversion.

Hmmm.

General consensus, then, seems to be YES possible... BUT a lot of hassle which may well end up more expensive than an existing aftermarket kit and run into balancing probs which the aftermarket will have sorted (hopefully!) in an off-the-shelf package.

Thanks for the feedback - that's been interesting.

That'll be the same Impreza that shot off the end of the handling track at TOTB and through a fence when the brakes failed?!

I remember George, he worked for Falkland performance centre years ago.

isn`t that the same George that works for extreme motorsport now top fitter

It's George Orr that works for Extreme. Before that he had his own garage in Bathgate.

Back to the brakes I remember speaking to one of AP Racings top tech guys at the Autosport Show a few years back.

They only recommended using their 330mm 4pot rear conversion, if you used their 365mm 6 pot fronts.

Simply to keep the brake balance in proportion.

Yeah he was driving! the throttle jammed open now I think about it, its on the TOTB dvd from that year. George was pretty cool about the whole thing afterwards but he was really lucky it wasnt a bigger 'off'.

I looked at getting bits made to fit my Alcons on the back but to be honest they seem to be worth so much second hand il just sell them and they will pretty much pay for a K-sport 4 pots rear conversion
