sti_steve Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 How "interchangable" is the spoiler on a classic changing from versions? Also the rear bumper is that an easy swap too? Reason i'm asking is ive found a car I think has potential but the way it is now is a no go.
Jon B Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 rear bumper is easy enough i think you just change em over mate... as for the spoiler i'm pretty sure they all have a different amount of fixings...so at most you may need to drill some new holes/or extra's to fit certain ones..i.e uk turbo mid spoiler has less fixings than sti version six so you would have to either drill all new mounting holes or just drill some extra holes..

StewartyBoy Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Due to hi and low level spoilers having a different distribution of weight, the holes are further apart for the latter. A drill and tiger seal to stop moisture getting in should sort that. From experience, all bumpers and skirts are interchangeable. Rear lights (wagon to saloon) are not interchangeable.

The rear spoiler would be an easy change along with the rear bumper. I've been informed that the skirts have been smoothed on to the body I guess so that would be more difficult or ££ to change? How are skirts smoothed anyway? Would it be difficult to remove the skirts leaving little evidence of this if I took it to a bodyshop? I reckon nowadays they can work wonders eh? I'm not really a bodykit man and think the impreza looks good as is with addition of a front splitter.
Jon B Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 a bodyshop wouldn't have too much trouble removing the skirts.... you would need to have the sides painted again and imho new skirts as well....

Yeah, put on the standard skirts with a respray. Can they blend the colour in or would that look like a dogs dinner? As there is no point in getting a FULL respray costing 1.5k+
Jon B Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 (edited) depends on how good a match they can get for the paint... imho i'd do both sides...doors wings and quarters to ensure a decent finish although there are bodyshops out there who will blend/fade old and new Edited February 7, 2010 by Jon B
sti_steve Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 Just had a look at the skirts and there is no way it would need much of a respray.

All Genuine, or good quality replica spoilers will fit using the original 4 boot lid holes. Low level, mid level STi 4, or high STi 5/6 spoilers all use the same fixing points. The STi 5/6 spoilers also use extra fixings in the middle, but the ends are all the same. Cheap ebay rubbish, well just bond those on. Davy

Jon B Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 do the sti version six spoilers not have more mounting points than the v4 mid level???......

sti_steve Posted February 7, 2010 Author Posted February 7, 2010 That's what I thought. I'm going to see the car shortly so will get a better idea then. It's just the information i've been told...
DR Motosport Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 (edited) Jon B said: do the sti version six spoilers not have more mounting points than the v4 mid level???...... On a genuine STi 5 or 6, the fixings are bolts from the bottom of the spoiler, so you need the holes in the boot lid for them to fit through. So, yes there's about a dozen holes needed. On a replica spoiler, the fixings are usually long bolts into captive nuts in the spoiler. So you can choose how many holes you want to drill. Many owners (90%) don't drill extra holes and just use the 4 originals with either adhesive bonding or tape. Hope you follow that. davy Edited February 7, 2010 by DR Motosport
StewartyBoy Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 Those skirts dont look like they are blended, just fixed on as per the norm as Jon said. As for my opinion on the spoiler. When changing a friends from low to high on the classic, the mounting points were wider apart. It may be that it was'nt an OE spoiler but it led me to believe that due to the overhang from its fixing point, it needed to have wider fixings.

It's not been an original spoiler, or the holes would have matched. And as I said earlier the better replicas would match too.
Jon B Posted February 7, 2010 Posted February 7, 2010 thats me learned something new today... it'll come in handy when i go looking for a new spoiler for mine
