Getting A Burnt Oil Smell And Some Smoke From Engine Bay

For a few weeks now I have been getting a burnt oil smell from my 98 Impreza, I thought it was coming from the rocker breathers, but because of the weather (I've been using our landrover) I havent checked them out yet. However, yesterday I fired up the Impreza and after warming it up I took it for a short drive, the burnt oil smell was much worse and when I stopped I was getting smoke from under the bonnet. The smoke appears to be coming from the turbo, is this a symtom of impending turbo failure?

You may have a leaking turbo oil delivery pipe or it could be the cam cover leaking onto the manifold/up-pipe and the smoke id rising up past the turbo, you would need to try and locate the source of the oil to be certain as to where it is from.

Thanks Ian, as soon as I can dig it out of the snow I will do that.
