Suspension Questions

I've got a 55 plate WRX, and there's a knocking sound coming from the rear at low speed, which I'm pretty sure is the rear shocks. Which brings up the following questions  :

1. How much should it cost to fix this?

2. Would an upgrade be a better idea? Cost?

3. How safe is the car currently with this knocking sound? Can I wait 3 weeks to get it fixed?

4. Can I just turn up the radio and drown out the noise? ;)

I can only offer an answer to number 4: Yes, this should work - try some drum'n'bass. Personally, I'd rather listen to knocking shocks than drum'n'bass... maybe I'm just getting old ;)

In seriousness, I thought the thread was worth bumping - I've had two sets of rear choc-absorbers replaced under warranty and don't intend on paying for replacements every few thousand miles once the car's out of warranty...

So I'd also be very interested in hearing recommendations for a more robust third-party replacement (preferably one that doesn't change the feel of the car too much).

I've just bought a set of the BC adjustable coilovers for the GB270 on the scoobynet group buy,

Cars only covered 6800 mls from new & replaced 8 shocks so far,

Rears have gone again after 800 miles, still deciding whether to bite the bullit & fit the coilovers just now or keep them & get KYB struts under warranty again,

It's the hassle factor & knowing once the cars out of warranty i'll have to change them anyway & not having faith in the cars handling when playing on the twistys

Now that is 'shocking' :D

I know what you mean. Must admit to being a tight-erse in that respect, so I'll be taking the 'free' choccos while the warranty is standing ;)

If it's broke upgrade it!! Mine were knocking at the back too.

I've got TEIN superstreets on mine and have got no complaints with them (except being a wee bit stiff).

Not many, just got them fitted about a month ago.....I do like the feel of the car with them on though.

Certainly be interested to hear how things hold up in the long-run (hopefully much longer than the standard shocks).

What are you driving, SS? I got my first ever Scooby wave in Carnwath from a blue blob or hawkeye (can't remember which). Guy might've just been passing through, right enough...

people are probably fed up with hearing me going on but i really really rate the bc coilovers, done about 2-3k miles on them and theyre so much better than the standard or prodrive suspension on newages. for just under £600 you cant go wrong with them,i find them more compliant and comfortable than teins. and for comparison purposes i believe subaru charge in the region of 300 per shock plus fitting and a good replacement shock is 100-150 plus fitting.

get them on straight away Bobby, youl wish youd done it sooner. the tv end up going back then? ;)

So is it actually dangerous to run with knocking shocks? Or just annoying?

And has anyone used that Subaru garage in Paisley, the one behind the 'The Fire Station'?

Maybe I should sue the council and get them to pay for the shocks. The problem has only developed since I moved to Paisley, and might be something to do with million speed humps I have to go over to and from work every day :@. I'd actually rather have a load of speed cameras to pass...

I had my car in the garage tonight for a check up after Knockers on saturday, I had a knocking from the rear corner, wait for it.........................get this. It turned out to be the boot lid needing adjusted, around 2 minutes and a scoosh of WD - sorted!! The garage put the car on a shaker to test the shocks as well as doing all the visual and physical checks and it was the fecking boot lid. Does need a front CV joint thou

I think I was running around with mine in a gubbed state for a while after I first got the car. Handling was OK apart from the odd jiggle from the back end when flattening out on the way out of corners - but only when pushing it a bit.

You could maybe contact the dealer for an 'official' answer on this one.

Put it this way mate, there's a reason that garage is behind a fire station.....

Just kidding, I haven't used it (but someone on here must have!).

Some of those bumps on our roads are so bad that when you drive over them it actually feels like you're 'passing' a load of speed cameras (if you catch my drift).

Might be hard to prove that the council's at fault in the case of shock absorbers (not quite as clear-cut as a chipped alloy), but no reason not to have a go!

Quite interested in these. Correct me if I'm wrong but the group buy price is £550 +pp?

Have you got them fitted yet and what's the ride like.

Just had a rear standard set replaced under warranty and they're still rumbly. Usng prodrive lowering springs.

Just noticed your post in this thread. What scooby are you using? Mine's a 56 Hawkeye WRX with prodrive lowering springs. I'd be interested in an opinion from anybody with this set up with the BC coilovers
