tried to upgrade software on my laptop there, now i have lost all my programmes, how do i get them back, if i can?

also my back up does not work

When you say backup what is your backup? Have you tried system restore? Uninstall the software and run system restore. Any more info would help. Was it antivirus software etc.

did u go from one OS to another? i.e XP to Vista? Depends what options you chose. need more info as your old stuff may still be there - if you logged in as a different name a new folder would be created for that user so desktop would be empty etc - but you would still have some of your programs in the Start menu - if that's all gone then you have done a fresh install.

Even if you have done a full format type upgrade it may be possible to recovery you documents/pictures/music ect. it's not a quick process (but it is quicker than recovery from a damaged drive). To protect any data thats left on your hard drive on your laptop you have to do 3 things NOW.

1. clone the hard drive to an external hard drive (using a bootable data recovery disc)

2. do not install anymore software on the laptop as it may overwrite data.

3. don't dowload any software, emails, windows updates ect as again it has to store this to your hard drive.

Oh a 4th thing. Don't PANIC.. it could be worse.

hi folks,

just been able to get back onto sidc ..... computer failure at same time as sidc going offline!!!

i have been able to get pmacfto look at it, seems like ultimate was the problem so going back to basics, he thinks all emails will be there as windows.old was created, i had a back up of all docs / photos, etc; program wise i have most.

touch wood all will be well.

ed209 ......... did panic ......... only 2 hours sleep that night trying to figure out what went wrong.
