sti pretender Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Thanks to Hypertech and Mr F for sorting out the knock spike. Car had develop what I can only describe as a spike in the knock level ( highest was 85) over 6k revs on full load with occassional overboost. Duncan checked the simples things first fuel pump & replaced filter. Then ran injector cleaner in case the was a slight blockage. Still no luck so on the rollers, injector duty was fine but was running a wee bit lean top end. Tried a new Maf (best deal was Roger Clark) which brought the knock down to about 60. Duncan thought great were getting somewhere, smoke pressure tested the system and found a tiny leak in one of the vaccum pipes sealed the hole thinking this would sort it and level had gone back up to 80. Next injectors were taken out, 1 was slightly down but nothing to cause a problem, spray pattern wasn't great so a good clean and new seals. Car was put back together and left as AndyF was over a couple of days later to map a few cars. Andy checked the map and nothing had changed from when I had it mapped back in August. With the Apexi being eliminated Andy did a couple of runs in the car and tweeked the map and car was back to normal. Only explanation is it was a combination of things Fueling, Maf and a leak. Anyway all fixed so a happy chap. Until Duncan total me my coilovers are past their best. Going to have to break this one gentle to Mandy in the last month I've had Road Tax, Insurance, Mot, Hypertech bill, new Maf and new HKS exhaust.
fai17 Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Glas its all sorted for you mate ...now go and enjoy it.
cullenmin Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 Great to hear you have sorted this out. I have just had the BC coilovers fitted to my Type R and it has totally transformed the handling of the car. I had V6 RA suspension fitted before and I thought that was quite firm suspension but now its a totally different driving experience. Car feels firmer, turns in quicker, has a whole load less roll (and I'm still on standard roll bars). I'd highly recommend these BC coilovers, especially at half the price of tein's. Group buy on scoobynet is still running, worth a look mate if you were thinking of replacing yours Rich

nkwrx Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Was at Hypertech when your nice shiny new exhaust was being fitted Car sounded great Robert. Hope all goes well now!
cullenmin Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Just typical that last night I get a knock spike of 61, I seen a flash on the dash which I can only assume was the CEL blipping as it went over 60 for a split second. Gave the car a good blast today in all gears and knock levels were fine, think 16 was my highest this morning. Hopefully mine was just a stray noise that the apexi had picked up. Its always worth a quick glance to see what your normal knock levels are, then you can determine when knock is starting to show signs of a problem developing. I'm going to continue driving mine like I normally do and just monitor the knock, like I said, hopefully I just had a wee spike last night. Rich
thewelsho Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Good news! Glad to hear it Duncan was telling me all about it on Saturday when I was in. Good luck and hope there are no more untoward mishaps of the engine-popping variety. JW
