C_WRX Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) I am toying with the idea of having my front bumper and bonnet (due to so many unsightly stone chips) and rear bumper (couple of scuffs that bug me but others might not notice so while in bodyshop) resprayed. Question is would it be the kind of thing that would put you off buying a car ? They'd be thinking "did it have a bump"? Is there anything you'd suggest I could do in advance of the respray to help me prove that it wasn't due to an accident ? Edited February 23, 2009 by C_WRX
Maxxed_Ross Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 in most cases you can get a decnet car detailer to "correct" these so that you wouldn't even know they were there - and it'll be much cheaper!
p1ggm Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 wouldnt put me off as i know how bad scoob paint it, tbh as long as its a good job most people wont notice, try chips away i used the guy in dundee a few times on diff cars and always great results

I'm capable myself and have most of the required equipment but there are some too far down that detailing out just won't work on - wet sanding always makes me nervous anyways !!! I used chips away once before and it ended up looking like a dot-to-dot puzzle - fair enough a few years ago on an awkward paint colour but was enough for me to just think this time about going for the respray perfection finish.

sandycam Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 What about taking photos of various stages, rubdown/spraying etc to prove you weren't spraying over putt etc after an accident?
C_WRX Posted February 23, 2009 Author Posted February 23, 2009 Liking both ideas of the receipt and the pics stages. But would it bother you buying a car knowing this had been done ? Two sides - "is something being covered up?" or the actual one "this guy really did take care of his car!!"
G.Mac Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 wouldnt bother me, I would probably have a poke about the areas that were painted to make sure that the owner wasnt telling porkies but to repaint the front end to get rid of stone chips is a sign of an enthusiast in my book Paint away I say! Graeme
scoobykev Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 Wouldn't bother me, i've had mine done twice. (6 years of ownership has seen a lot of stonechips) If it's done right you shouldn't be able to tell it's been sprayed.
stubaroo Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I have just had the front end re-sprayed on mine. There were two significant stone chips on the bonet from when I bought the car. I scuffed the bumper one day reversing out the driveway. I bought second hand fog light covers and they were covered in imperfections. Then to top it off I was de-tango-ing the head lights and I managed to do a little bit of damage to one of the wings. That last bit needed immediate attention so I got quotes for that on its own and a quote for the whole bonnet, the whole bumper, both fog light covers and both front wings blended. I went for the works and the car looks fantastic now. For anyone interested in my area it was Glenrothes Coachworks that did the work and the whole job was less than £500. They also cleaned and waxed the whole car for me on collection. When I come to sell the car I have the quotation before the work was carried out and I have the reciept for the work carried out, so no worrys.
mystery machine Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 (edited) I say "go for it" - wouldn't bother me, particularly if it'd been mentioned up-front. Edited February 23, 2009 by Mystery Machine
micra_wrc Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 wouldnt bother me either but just wonder if its worth it? you'll still get stone chips after the respray/touch up....
the blue dragon Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 I got mine full resprayed about 6 months after i bought it as i wasnt happy with general condition of it. I used Bodyworx in Broxburn(local for me) and they had the car for nearly 3 weeks as i asked them to do a proper job, so everything got stripped on it. I also got a headed letter from them to state that the car had been resprayed for cosnmetic reasons and not due in any way to accident damage. Cheers Iain
scoobymark Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 to be honest i would be more worried if someone was telling me their scoob has never been painted at the front as most have had some sort of chips away repair or a respray, even when driven carefully they attract chips. either that or they drive like a pansy
mystery machine Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 even when driven carefully they attract chips. Tell me about it... During a spirited run on Sunday, halfway into a bend, mine took dunt on the driver's door as something was flung up from the road. Says to the wife "ouch, that's going to leave a mark", and sure enough... Guess that's what touch-up paint is for Bottoms of the doors are starting to show some healthy B-road rash now too I can understand Colin wanting to respray the front-end, though - chips around there being all the more noticeable, especially if your car is black or WR blue...

Tam.
cristaltips Posted February 23, 2009 Posted February 23, 2009 As long as I knew why it had been done it wouldn't bother me. If you really wanted to splash out you could always get it covered too, the chap who did my windows reckoned it would be about £500 to clearshield protect it.
the blue dragon Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Do you mind me asking how much that set you back, Iain?Tam. Just over 2k Tam, but there was a replacement splitter, new front screen window seal included in that price. Iain p.s Bear in mind for that price the whole car was stripped out, window glass etc, and a fantastic job done!!
colzo Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I know how particular C WRX is about his car and how slight imperfections would bother him. As for a respray, I personally wouldn't buy a car that had a respray unless I knew the car inside out. Also if the resprayed sections weren't first class then they would bother me as much if not more than a chip or a scratch. ...scoob paint is so soft. I'm not sure Subaru paint is as soft as everyone thinks its just really thin.

Cheers for the info, Iain - I'm always curious about the going rate for a proper respray. I take it that was that a same-colour job?
mystery machine Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I'm not sure Subaru paint is as soft as everyone thinks its just really thin. I reckon you're right - from what I can tell it's fairly thin and hard. In fact, if it were a little softer, and crucially a little more flexible, it might be a little less inclined to chip.
the blue dragon Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Cheers for the info, Iain - I'm always curious about the going rate for a proper respray. I take it that was that a same-colour job? Yes mate, twas indeedy, had thought about a different colour but the price was going to be through the roof iirc. cheers iain
mystery machine Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Yes mate, twas indeedy, had thought about a different colour but the price was going to be through the roof iirc. Aye, I can imagine the price would have been through the roof... and through the engine bay and the door shuts and the boot lid Having said that, nothing worse than lifting a car's bonnet to find a different colour scheme underneath!
