Fitted My New Bars To My Sti

fitted new whiteline roll bars to my 08 sti last nite , front 22mm and on the rear 22mm also. here is how it went

started with the rear first as it looked the bigger job

DSCF2321.jpg

loosend off the drop links first and the brackets that hold the bushes to the x member

DSCF2323.jpg

the new hatch suspension is different from the older cars, not as simple

now with the rear 22mm bar fitted on to the car with the poly bushes and the rear wishbone nut removed to allow the fitting of the whiteline brace bar

DSCF2325.jpg

brace bar in place

DSCF2327.jpg

you are supplied all the hardware ,washers and longer bolts for the tubed bracket that fits on the bush cup and grease for the bushes

DSCF2328.jpg

DSCF2329.jpg

total time for fitting 30mins ,then fitted the front.

you have to remove the plastic undertray first

DSCF2331.jpg

when its off the car you see whats entailed ,its a lot simpler than the newage scoobies .no full xmember to remove but a strengthening bracket

DSCF2341.jpg

8 bolts hold this on

DSCF2342.jpg

then remove the drop links both sides and the bush loop bkts

DSCF2337.jpg

DSCF2334.jpg

the old anti roll bar on the deck in 15 mins

DSCF2343.jpg

new bar checked and ready to go on the car

DSCF2344.jpg

same as all the other scoobies classic and newage ,the bar points upward under the steering arms,:wonder: some guys fit them the other way round and end up fouling the steering ,not a good idea :nono:

DSCF2345.jpg

the bar fitted stg bkt back on ready for the undertray

total time 30mins ,ready to rock and roll:cool:

what does it drive like ,before i tell you here is what my wife says it used to handle like . A FOOKIN BOAT IN A STORM, well she is the expert .

now the first impressions are , flatter cornering more stable at high speed ,entry speed into roundaouts increased with confedence ,exit more stable and gives a greater feeling of control . i did not like the way the car handled before  but after the honeymoon period of having a new car and being cautious with it i never felt like the car would go around corners even with the electronic gismos that are on it . i had one moment with her that i thought this it it big man were f***ed , on the entry to a sharp left then a sweeping right just after i encountered a slight undulation mid bend :eek2: she broke away hopping to the right ,caught it then secondary slide snapped full left :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: just managed to catch it back ///biggest moment in a while that would have never happend in my old sti (scooby glue)named after the reg no st ** pva . guess where i am going back to try this bad boy out

Nice write up geo, especially for folks with the new model also thinking the handling could do with improvement.

If we don't hear from you for a while we know the corner won :) - sure it'll be better now !

I like how you describe your mid-corner "moment" - Snap here, slide there, catch this... How can you remember all that. All of my moments (on track) are just a blur!!! Nice to see some goodies coming along for the latest Impreza too. Nice one!

Ever had one so bad that your brain just went into 'block out' mode? It's as if you're resigned to the fact that you're going to crash, so your head fills up with endorphins, in anticipation of severe pain (or at best a hefty insurance hike and a few weeks on the bus)................ all of a sudden the noise and stress that was bothering you a second ago is replaced with an overwhelming sense of calmness and the soothing melody of birdsong...

...or maybe that was just me... ;)

Glad the new ARBs worked out for you, CK.

Devilla Forest up the road from Clackmannan? I never even knew they held rallying there. Do they still do that?

it was used for years for rallying inc the scottish rally and sc /championship rounds ..the best parts of the stage were the yumps and the gate posts

which claimed many a rally car ,or the split junction here is me at said juntion ,kingdom stages

again many years later another part of devilla

Nice pics geo

Just for info you can change the front roll bar on a blobeye by only removing the strengthing plate I have done it. You can also fit a blobeye front roll bar to a classic but cant fit a classic roll bar to a blobeye. My RA has a Perrin front roll bar which was destined for my 55 Plate WRX but never quite made it onto the road car ;) . I did try and fit the non-adjustable whiteline 22mm front bar for the RA ont to the blobeye but it will not go on due to the mountings for the steering rack fouling on the bar.

Fascinating story, geo - cheers for filling us in with the history. Always great to see pics of a MkII Escort too - the last RWD revision, of course (hence the popularity with rallyists like yersel, I guess). Remember when those buggers were everywhere? (getting nostalgic now)

When did they finish with the rallying up there, then?

i think about 15 years ago m8 ,i retired from rallying in 1994 scottish tarmac series, my last run in davilla would be around 89-90 i think with my 3 door cossie. i remember malcom wilson using the first escort cosworth as course car on the scottish rally .the weather was scorching and in dv he wiped the bogy time fook me he was fast .the times were counted at the end of the rally and if running he would have won it by miles great days when men were men and sheep were nervious

Thanks again for sharing that with us. Sounds like they packed it in at Devilla not long after I started driving - think I can remember seeing rally cars heading up there on the back of pickups from time to time...

Diggin this one up again...

And...?

well i have been to the same bit of road in the wet and dry

no problems this time went round at the same speed no worries ,then increased the entry speed by 5 mph ,still here 10 still here 15 mph guess what ,yes still here . the locals in the area were gettin very up set as this loud white subaru was passing the farms and houses many times within 40 mins so i made a quick getaway before the cops were called, would not have looked good in the local press (ex police fleet manager reported for annoying locals and sheep )lol

anyway the car handled great but still much more room for improvement ,springs too soft ,ride height too high ,needs anti lift kit or maybe top mounts to give me more caster /camber,also the car is under tyred needs more rubber and more offset

watch this space

cheers geo

Will with interest mate. My insurance is still a tad high to get mods underway just yet and there's a couple of other current financial priorities at home... aged 9 months and 2 years respectively! *chuckle*

'suppose the ultimate Q is whether you think she'll handle as well as th new age or classics without selling a kidney!

Re: springs (and I'm probably on a "teaching-granny-to-suck-eggs" effort here...) yon Eibach Pro-kit spring setup seems popular, although I'd rate your opinion on it. I see Litchfield are selling the same AST kit used on the current JDM-based Type-20. One assumes that replacing the whole setup'll do a better job than modding components... or is it a bit too expensive and drastic.

hi bal /i dont like coil overs on a road car( imho) there to harsh for my tastes but you can find a good compromise using sti bits and after market bits to get the qualities you require.now if your talking track car thats a different ball game ,doing that too .

remember that most of us older guys will be letting our wifes drive the car ,and you dont want her always moaning that the car rattles ,klonks and vibrates all the time .we are looking for a balance between power and handling ,or at least i want that sti feel back without breaking the bank

cheers geo
