upsoluteSTi Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Hi all, Im having loud knocking noise coming from all corners of my scooby but dont know for sure if this is cause by the coilovers or something else. I've own this car for 2 yrs now. The HKS coilovers was already fitted to the car since bought. I have done some research on few forums, some think this might be something to do with droplinks, some think its a warn ball joints. When i turn the wheel full lock It feels like the front wheels is coming loose like the wheel nuts is not properly fitted. Its hard to explain coming from someone that ont have much machanical background. Any help narrow the list down would be much appreciated before i go and buy myself a new suspension when Its not the cause of the problem. Cheers.
ciaranrb5 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 Have you got uprated strut top mounts? It could be them that are knackered
upsoluteSTi Posted February 6, 2009 Author Posted February 6, 2009 If the top mounts is knackard would this mean that i will have to replace the coilovers?
RATechnology Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If the top mounts is knackard would this mean that i will have to replace the coilovers? Doesn't mean you have to change the complete unit will just mean you'll have to replace the top mounts (that's if you can & the parts are available?) If you've had the Coilovers on for two years maybe a good time to get them rebuilt.. Check all your other suspension components as well such as drop links ball joints.. See if there's any other play that could be causing your noise? May even be a wheel bearing? How many miles on the car?
scouk Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 If you've had the Coilovers on for two years maybe a good time to get them rebuilt.. Ok.. straight question.. What is the realistic lifetime for impreza suspension?.. So many incidents of dampers going pop after a few months.. Mine seem to wear out after a year.. And now coilovers need re-coned after 2 years!, THe Uprated dampers on the RB320's are dying on a regular basis.. Is there such a thing as reliable suspension for the Impreza?

Not sure I can comment on the reliability of certain suspension however, yes with the RB320 there seems to be a rather large amount of these being replaced. Having come from a motorsport background I would recommend having your Coilovers serviced and checked every year.. This will hopefully avoid any issues. Again this is what i would recommend on a rally or race car to ensure reliability and performance of your dampers. For road use I would imagine that two years between services would be sufficent.. Although I would have them checked for leaks and wear by a specialist every year again for ensured reliability and performance. An alignment / Geomentry setup wouldn't go amiss either every year. (all mileage dependant of course) One thing you have to remember is that the Impreza be it an STI or WRX is a performance car and when driven accordingly need's slightly higher mantinence than a normal econobox!
upsoluteSTi Posted February 12, 2009 Author Posted February 12, 2009 What are the syptoms of the drop link or ARB if they are in need of replacement? When I turn the wheel on full lock the front wheels feel like the wheel nuts is not fully tighened. Could this be the coilovers or something else? Any help would be much appreciated

emoe Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I agree"!! your life is in your hands here. Get a specialist to find out whats happening. You may find its a simple repair or replacement of something. Its just not worht it all coming undone on a run!
