Tapping / Clicking Noise

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever heard a constant tapping / clicking noise coming from what sounds to be behind the instrument panel (05 WRX).

Can hear it from around 2-3k rpm, think it disappears when I dip the clutch. Drowned out by exhaust / radio before any suggests that as a solution.

I heard something similar years ago in my fathers old car, turned out to be a faulty speedo cable.

Hoping its not something more sinister.

Check to see if boost solenoid is touching the body work its on driver side strut .

The pipe coming out the bottom looks like it just touches the bodywork as it bends away toward the engine, but other than being bolted to the bodywork, the solenoid itself doesn't look particularly untoward.

I experience a very similar noise in my '06 WRX, between 2-3K rpm. I would describe it as 'chattering' (onomatopoeia, eh?). I had the Subaru dealer take a look and they came to the conclusion that it was indeed 'normal' - they claim to have heard similar from other Imprezas. They stopped short of explaining what is actually causing the noise, mind... (in hindsight I should have asked!) :D

Internet research suggests that what I'm hearing is usually referred to as 'wastegate chatter', although whether the wastegate or the boost solenoid is the source of the noise is often up for debate.

I've also read that the direct cause of the problem is gummed-up oil in the wastegate and/or solenoid - often as a result of overfilling (incidentally, the dealer appears to have overfilled mine at the last service - hmmmm). If you do a bit of Googling, you can find advice on how to clean the boost solenoid. I haven't bothered, I've almost gotten used to the chattering now... (annoying as it is) :D

a simpler suggestion but my speedo make a ticking noise when I've reset the trip counter and it wasnt fully depressed when i reset it,

the numbers "click" when the dials turn :)

Yeah, had a wee google search after Dipsy replied earlier. Sounds fairly commonplace !!!

Problem is, how come, after 3 years, have I just noticed it !!! Maybe it is a gumming up thing. It was serviced a couple of months back, but I've only really been driving it in the last two weeks.

I'll keep my ear on it.

Thanks.

Hmm, interesting suggestion Imy. I first noticed on Hogmanay on the way into Glasgow. Problem is, I refilled at Tesco on the way out. I'll look into that idea ...

As mentioned in my previous post ... I'll keep my ear on it.

The only time i had a noisey solenoid valve is the way the siren was fitted on my newage Jdm Sti the bottom bolt had been removed and the bracket bent for the siren to go on .I ended up going back to were i bought the car and got fobbed of so the next day at home looked under the bonnet a bit more my self and noticed the said valve was touching the body so moved it away took the car for a run no more noisey .Phoned the garage up and complained i was after a new solenoid braket did not get any were with them so took the bracket off straightened so all three bolt holes are used and refitted the siren a different way to the bracket then bought a bolt from subaru dealer job's perfect
