thewelsho Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 Who would try this? http://www.frozensolid.co.uk/ A method of strengthening gearboxes, engine blocks, brake discs etc, by deep freezing the components. Most likely a load of baloney, especially since the website looks like it was designed by a 5-year old blindfolded, but jsut wondered if anyone had ever heard of this.
jas41 Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 I have heard of this before, lots of info on it if you search google for cryo treatment of race engines. It is supposed to add durability to metal components and is used quite a lot in race engine applications, particuarly in the US. It is expensive due to the nature of the freezing equipment and the time it takes to do it, metal is cooled and then reheated very slowly, not just shoved in a deep freeze. Never heard it used on brake discs, it is mainly used on stressed engine components such as cranks & blocks which are more expensive to replace.
