j10 dly Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Hey there, Im having a problem with my 98 Classic Impreza, the Check Engine Light has been coming on, it started on Saturday Morning before we left Lanark to convoy down to ProDrive, since i had been looking forward to the gathering for so long, i decided to risk it anyway and make the journey (even if that meant coming home on the back of an AA lorry) Thing is as soon as i was on motorway and built up speed it would go off again, then when we hit any sort of slow moving traffic it would come back on, so im thinking so sort of Air Flow problem. Drooped car off today at normal machanic i use, and he has said his Diagnostic copmuter will not read subarus, he has phoned around other people and the same thing, does this mean i will have to go to dealership or anyone else out there any ideas what problem may be. Cheers James
craigy Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 http://www.saxonfields.freeserve.co.uk/Sco...Diag%20Page.htm very helpfull this, could be MAF
j10 dly Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 Cheers mate for that link, I was thinking the MAF myself, but thing cant find out what the actual problem is until car can get hooked up Diagnostic computer, and that seems to be the problem finding one that reads subarus (without having to bite the bullet and go to dealer) Cheers James
emoe Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Your 98 uses the OBD1 system so most mobile and shop mechanics use the SNAP ON MODIS system which is only OBDII if you can find a mechaninc that has the old snap on system or an older OBDI reader youll be fine. Just as craigy said, you can check your management yourself. Under the dash right under the steeringwheel, (get your head down there and look up under with a torch) youll see the two black and two green connectors. Connect them together, Do the black first, and watch the engine light, the flashes are the fault code in the memory. check what that relates to and youll find your problem. To reset the ECU, connect the green ones as well and drive the car then disconnect all and youre reset. If the fault is still there the engine light will come back on and doing this again will throw you that code too. Hope you have luck in this,
j10 dly Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 Thanks mate for that advice I went out and connected the 2 black wires together, the "check engine" light came on and stayed on with no pulses, then when i disconnected them it went off again. Any ideas. Cheers James

j10 dly Posted September 2, 2008 Author Posted September 2, 2008 Did you do just the black ones? Yeah mate, you think I should do green ones as well then???
emoe Posted September 2, 2008 Posted September 2, 2008 Yeah mate, you think I should do green ones as well then??? NONO you should do the black ones and if theres a fault they will flash. So if theres no flash, maybe that means theres no fault recorded. Attach the green ones do the reset function as explained and then unplug them all and see if the check engine light cmoes on again. Not all failures are recorded, some are intermittent and sont get logged as a fault code.
