garetho Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 Hi all, It's only recently I've been looking into Subaru ownership. While at KH yesterday I spotted the P1 which is one of my favs. Unfortunately the owner of the car never seemed to be around to ask some Qs. So I need one as a daily runner - 8k a year OK, so I understand a 1000 were made for the UK market. I've managed to locate two low mileaged ones (35k) for around the £12k mark but wonder if someone could advise me on a couple of things. What are they like to run? Parts expensive? I guess like all Scoobies they're pretty bomb proof...or is that only the newer ones? Advice/Crits please! Thanks G

dougie549 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 (edited) HI M8 Just wondering if the P1 you were talking about was the one on track our the other one. We were ther yesterday in our's and not on track, pity as ours is up for sale at the moment aswell, any question then fire away. Hopfully here is a link to the said car for sale. http://p1woc.co.uk/postnuke/index.php?name...pic&t=20946 As for the running side of things its always going to be the fuel thats the killer, service is once a year at those mile's Parts well that depends on what bit's you need but you will always find some one selling new bits they bought and never fitted which makes things cheaper. Yes it is better to have one mapped but not nessecery as there are plenty on oridginal engune's and high mile's, it's more down to how it's driven Cheers Dougie Edited August 31, 2008 by dougie549
superstar_tradesman Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 or you could buy my 555 for a lot less and have plenty of cash left over
Hepy Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I had one for nearly 4 years and never had a problem. Mine only had a decat and blitz nur spec-r, AndyF remap too. I also changed the MAF yearly as they are apparently week on that MY of Impreza. I think £12k is too expensive though. Even if it is low mileage. Have you considered a version 5, or 6 STI Type R, if your after the 2 door thing?
RA Dunk Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I guess like all Scoobies they're pretty bomb proof... incorrect, like alot of scoobies they do go bang
garetho Posted August 31, 2008 Author Posted August 31, 2008 Thanks for the replies guys. Dougie, there was a P1 on track at KH. I was in a 340R (green) so I guess I'm a sucker for rare cars. Currently have a Leon Cupra R for my daily runner so this would be making way for the P1. I've noticed a few people mention engine rebuilds. D all P1s need this and if so around what sort of mileage?

P1's have a briquette in the fuel tank to increase the octance of the uk fuel, if this hasn't been replaced as per servicing guidelines and hasn't been re mapped for uk fuel this can cause them to go bang. if it's really a 2 door your after go for a type r,
colzo Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 I owned a P1 for a year (not long, but long enough). First of all the looks are great and so to was the handling (firm and quite low - had to be very careful in multi storey car parks!) on the optional 18s. I had the Alcon brake conversion which was immense, can`t imagine how it would be on standard four pots (scary?). Bullet proof? I don`t think so, most are on new engines and my gearbox started leaking oil with 3rd and 4th needing replaced. I found driving at 30 a chore but once in its stride impeccable. Even doing 8k a year if you are going to go by the book then the service intervals are every 6 months. Like any tuned Impreza it will drink V Power like no ones business. I loved owning it, then when I bought the 03 STI I regretted selling it but when I got the 05 STI I knew I made the right choice and its my favourite Impreza to date. My advice would be to buy the lowest mileage, no more than 2 owners and standard or Prodrive options only. Good luck.
col666 Posted August 31, 2008 Posted August 31, 2008 P1's have a briquette in the fuel tank to increase the octance of the uk fuel, if this hasn't been replaced as per servicing guidelines and hasn't been re mapped for uk fuel this can cause them to go bang. if it's really a 2 door your after go for a type r, Later type R's have the same engine problems as the P1, dodgy MAF's or O2 sensors which eventually fail and the engine goes pop. Been there done that! Quite fancy a P1 myself but would only buy one that has already been rebuilt by a reputable company. My old Type R that was on the convoy yesterday for a while may be up for sale.....trying to resist buying it back
P1Andy Posted September 1, 2008 Posted September 1, 2008 Do you know the edition numbers of the ones for sale? If you ask over on p1woc.co.uk then we might know more about the cars your looking at. I have had mine for over 18months now ad has been used as a daily driver. Sailed through the mot's no problem. Only problem i have had was the 5th gear nut coming loose. Oh and seeing lots of shiney parts for sale that seem to attract my wallet a lot!!
