~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Another question for the masses..... Would you rather have a standard STi or a standard WRX RA ?
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Interesting thread here on DCCD http://bbs.scoobynet.com/drivetrain-11/591...friend-foe.html
WUZ Posted September 28, 2008 Posted September 28, 2008 Another question for the masses.....Would you rather have a standard STi or a standard WRX RA ? STi with a little lightening would be my choice Russell
DR Motosport Posted September 29, 2008 Posted September 29, 2008 David / Arch - how do you find the RA without DCCD ?? - does it still float your boat or do you hanker for it at times................Also, I had no idea that the WRX RA gearing was shorter than the STi RA gearing - you learn something new everyday I am looking at this http://bbs.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-general...tml#post8162895 but wonder if I'd hanker for DCCD or the STi suspension etc Incidentally I would never pay what he is asking for the car......£7k is a joke CGS My ra is a '94 model, so never had the DCCD. To be honest, I never think about it, or wish it was there. The car is set up to be very stable and balanced at Knockhill. In the dry it just doesn't move about - Full Pirelli slicks tend to help. In the wet, it's more tail happy, but still very easy to control, with a touch of opposite lock. Great fun. It's now set up exactly how I wanted it, for me I wouldn't change anything set up wise. But what I want, wouldn't suit everyone. Even with a car with DCCD, once it's set to your liking it rarely gets moved. As for STi or WRX ra. I would say STi. But when you get offered a WRX ra with 53,000km; know it's history, and it's fitted with a full de-cat, 330mm AP's, 17" STi alloys and GAB / HKS Coilovers; all for a stupidly low price. It's a no brainer. David
arch Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Cal I pretty much echo Dave's feelings. I have never driven a DCCD equiped car but find the set up on mine pretty neutral you can get it to slide into corners without much effort required to keep it straight. There are of course times on track etc that the DCCD would be very usefull but at this point in time for me its a would be very nice to have item but not at the very top of my wish list for next year. I must admit that John uses his to very good effect so I suppose it depends what you want to use the car for, if its for the road its probably not needed if you are going to do a lot of track work and are prepared to spend some time playing with the settings then it maybe worth having but not at a massive premium as it is easy to retrofit later if you then decide it is something you really want. As to comparing the WRX to STI RA's well mine probably isnt the best to compare as its pretty much a mix of bits from quite a few years and types so couldnt comment and its not exactly as if the trim and seats are important to me
colin_ross Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 but not at a massive premium as it is easy to retrofit later if you then decide it is something you really want. Not too sure I agree with that comment. 911 on snet did a project retro fitting it to his hillclimb car and said it was an absolute nightmare, it certainly looked like it. The friend or foe thread was one I started many moons ago but one that probably needs updating. At the time I was adding power to the car and was feeling the car fidgeting a lot more. I thought this was down to the dccd but in the end I traced it down to torque steer, this was because my car had a plated front diff. Now I have a quaife atb the car is much more stable and I'm learning the dccd all over again as the car drives so different. It still oversteers like a mkII escort though
~ ~ Cal ~~ Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Col - I did not realised that you started that thread until I went back and revisited it !! Thanks for the input guys - I would love to have DCCD but I think it's not top priority. I have a few dillemas this week but should be a Scooby owner again by the weekend Cheers Cal

colin_ross Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 I'd have to reread the thread to be sure. I seem to remember lots of issues with looms, ecu's, dashes, mismatched diffs, hubs, brakes etc. Much cheaper/easier to buy a car with it already fitted if you want it.

arrobajay Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 hi all, i can see this post has been silent for over a month now, however my question is very much linked... I've got a classic (very classic) 93 wrx, on a K plate. It's aesthetically and mechanically in great condition, however I have a slight puzzlement about the gearbox. From reading what you've all posted, and what info I've seen elsewhere, I shouldn't have such a short ratio gearbox... 'However'... If I'm on the motorway sitting at say 80mph on the clock, it's roaring away at approx 4000rpm... Did they fit a short ratio box to the very early classic's such as mine, or has the box been replaced for a short ratio example? J.

arrobajay Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 you sure you dont have a WRX RA? the badge on the car only says WRX, and I'm pretty sure my mum's wrx ra used to have type ra in small letters under the wrx badge. mine also doesn't have the water i/c spray button, which i thought was on the type ra? J.
RA Dunk Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 do you have your ariel on the A pillar or boot? do you have a rear wiper?
arrobajay Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 do you have your ariel on the A pillar or boot? do you have a rear wiper? my aerial is on the A pillar, and yes, I have a rear wiper. I'm guessing these are distinguishing factors? Are there any other features I can identify to help?
RA Dunk Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 i know RA`s have ariels on the A pillar but no rear wiper, i know mine has, dunno why you have got both of these though, maybe a different feature on the early cars? try across here m8 www.type-ra.co.uk

arrobajay Posted November 10, 2008 Posted November 10, 2008 Whats the model code on the car? from reading LOADS of rants and threads on type-ra, looks like mine is just a wrx as it only revs to 7k. (i say "just" a wrx, and "only" rev's to 7k, lol). it's too dark to check the code at the moment, so i'll do that tomorrow, but it seems that the box has either been changed for a short ratio box, or the 92 to late 93 models all came with short ratio boxes? mine was first registered april 93, so maybe that's a possibility? anybody any wiser? i'm considering changing mine for a newer model shortly, and really fancy a 2-door model. how are these compared to the wrx, and especially compared to a sti type-ra? the 2 door i'd probably go for is the type-r on around a 97-98 plate, as this is probably what my budget allows...
