strapper Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I have a my97 sti v3 and the engine check light is on the dash, the car seems to fuel cut at 4500rpm. I hooked a boost gauge up to the car last night and it's peaking at 1.6 bar on a standard car surely this isn't right? The car has no boost controllers or bleed valves, alsomade sure the actuator arm was moving freely and its ok. I checked the codes on the ecu and it's showing 24 and 33. 24 is idle control solenoid and 33 is vehicle speed sensor. I replaced the idle control solenoid, replaced the boost control solenoid andalso replaced the maf sensor and the fault is still occuring. Has anyone ever experianced this before or know what I should be looking for?
strapper Posted July 3, 2008 Author Posted July 3, 2008 Not yet but they do feel hard and brittle. What size are they? i was also thinking the diaphram in the actuator maybe?
sti pretender Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Was a vaccum hose on my 97 that caused my engine to blow. Talking to Brian at the Glasgow meet last night it was the same on his last car.
emoe Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Sounds to me like the vac hoses from the turbo oulet pipe to the tee and then to the actuator may be leaking, split or just bad. There is also a pipe going up to the solenoid. Could be this stuck open. Best thing to do is get a piece of vac hose, and connect this DIRECTLY from the output pipe on the turbo outlet to the wastegate. Now drive the car. You should get about 7psi MAX and no fuel cut. If that is all ok, replace the entire pipework with new. REMEMBER you have a small brass restrictor in the pipe, you MUST include this or youll have less boost. If once you replace the pipework and make sure you do the one to the solenoid, and the car STILL fuel cuts and boost overpressure, then the fault lies in the solenoid. Either replace or fit a dawes.
strapper Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Thanks I will try this. I have already replaced the boost solenoid. What is the standard boost pressure?
strapper Posted July 5, 2008 Author Posted July 5, 2008 Thats what I Thought! Oh dear can't believe its 1.6 bar!
wilky Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Thats what I Thought! Oh dear can't believe its 1.6 bar! Take the hoses that you have off and squirt brake cleaner through them this will clean out any oil which has been blown into them causing them to clog. This can happen if the oil has been over filled. Do them one at a time so you dont get them muddled up. Then squirt the cleaner through the boost solinoid and dont be shy, give it a good cleaning out. If that doesnt cure the problem then its not the turbo boost hoses or the solinoid causing it to overboost because of clogging. Callum W
strapper Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 Is that the vaccum hoses or the ones on the boost side?
wilky Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Is that the vaccum hoses or the ones on the boost side? The hoses that connect the turbo, to the boost solinoid and the actuator on the turbo. Not the actual intercooler connections.
strapper Posted July 6, 2008 Author Posted July 6, 2008 Ok cheers mate. This would cause the rise in boost pressure if one had came off or had a break in it?
wilky Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Ok cheers mate. This would cause the rise in boost pressure if one had came off or had a break in it? If there was a leak in the pipes then the wastegate might not be opening causing it to overboost, or if the pipes have a blockage.
strapper Posted July 7, 2008 Author Posted July 7, 2008 I have just replaced all the vaccum hoses there on the car, never noticed any splits or cracked bits but the silicone hose feels a tighter fit. As for the small brass restrictor where is this located as I never came across one? Just going to do the one from the dump valve then take the car a run.
strapper Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 Found the brass restrictor! Just got the hose to the dump valve to replace think I'm going to fit a bailey dv26 while I'm in there reset the ecu then take it out and see what I'm getting. Won't have time to try it until tomorrow night as I'm just in from work. Some of the hoses were really slack and some brittle. Took it out a run last night without he restrictor and as suggested I was only getting 7 psi so I think I am headed in the right direction! Fingers crossed
stevenhiggster Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 BTW the standard boost pressure on a V3 STi is higher it is supposed to be at least 1.1bar, mine is currently happy at 1.3 and that is quite normal. Aparently.
strapper Posted July 12, 2008 Author Posted July 12, 2008 Well still no joy! Tested my actuator and that was ok. Took the vac hose off with the brass restrictor and put a straight bit of hose on and reset the ecu, I was only getting 8 spi of boost but the check engine light came back on which proves that what ever is bringing the light on is also causing the highboost pressure, could it be sensor related? I am still getting the same fault codes, could the speed sensor do this?
