Don Mega Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 Hi folks After some brake advice… I currently have the Prodrive Alcon brake kit on my RA and the discs are now a bit worn, just past the point of being ok for skimming. So I’m after some new discs and pads!! Does anyone know if it has to be specific Prodrive Alcon discs and pads to replace them? Or can I fit different discs that are the same size (330 or 335mm I think, need to double check) The callipers are perfect but I think the Alcon discs are pretty expensive… Do you think I should sell the callipers and buy a whole new set or try and find replacements? If so where is the best place to get them? anyone have some for sale, or maybe some second hand AP's Any help / advice on options much appreciated! Cheers Dennis
AlanG Posted May 28, 2008 Posted May 28, 2008 The Alcon discs are expensive as you've found out cause they're one piece assemblies but if you check out aftermarket brake disc / caliper suppliers like Godspeed and the rest you should be able to get discs and bells to suit the Alcons for a lot less than the price of Alcon discs. I wouldn't bother replacing what you've got as the Alcons are good calipers.
craig79 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Agree Ian's got deals on for discs / pads during May and his discs are guaranteed against warping even through track use Craig.
micra_wrc Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 hi dennis, good to see you posting again. when did you get the RA? thought you had a wagon or mibbe i'm confusing you with someone else
Don Mega Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 (edited) Cheers for the help all Managed to speak with ian and he's currently doing a group buy price on the discs! £350 for the pair and £120 for a set of ferodo DS2500's. Including the postage its £485 all in which i think is a top price? usually the discs are 450 alone. Hi Imy, how you getting on? yup i used to have the sport wagon which was quite good fun.. Almost 3 years ago i sold that now and bought a silver 1995 turbo 2000 after it once norwich union gave me the go ahead lol. Can't remember if i was on any of the runs with it, i think there was one. It was mainly the Fife meets and runs i went on. Sold the turbo 2000 after 2 years of happy owning and bought the RA about 10 months ago, I love it! Will be trying to make more meets this year again! and posting more often Cheers Dennis Edited May 29, 2008 by Don Mega
craig79 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Don't know if it's any interest to ya mate : http://bbs.scoobynet.com/group-buys-356/69...brake-kits.html Craig.
Don Mega Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 Noticed there's a couple of group buys on scoobynet for brakes, the D2 racing setup and K-Sport brakes as used by quite a few time attack guys - including zen! The 330mm K-Sport setup with 6 pot callipers are about £680 plus del. There's also the D2 racing ones around £650 and XENDO tunedTM 6-Piston Big Brake Kits?? for even less. Does anyone think it's worth selling my alcon callipers and going for one of these kits? I already have braided hoses etc. Just wanna check before i splash out 500 squids Cheers D.
Don Mega Posted May 29, 2008 Author Posted May 29, 2008 lol craig ya must have posted that just as i was typing out my last reply there.. I don't know either? Spend 490 quid and stick with alcon setup or sell alcon callipers and go with one of the group buy setups.. Aint sure! D.
craig79 Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 Lol in the same kinda boat mate, I'm needing discs and Ian Godney could prob do a deal with pads for the 200 mark. Then again you're getting the D2's for aboot 680 inc postage and I could sell the brembos and discs which would mean I'm spending aboot 400 depending what I got for the brembos....... oooooooo ma heed hurts !!!!! Craig.

Rednosespeccltd Posted May 29, 2008 Posted May 29, 2008 I got a set of Performance friction Bells, disks and pads for 569 all in on a group buy on SN, standard Brembo callipers, Fantastic brakes and well worth it IMO. Mac

Don Mega Posted June 4, 2008 Author Posted June 4, 2008 What did you decide to do craig? I noticed the D2 group buy dissapeared from scoobynet last week, the K-Sport one is still on but I decided to keep the prodrive setup. Ordered the new discs and pads from Ian over the weekend, not arrived yet though. Dennis

Just after the offer was put up there was a post saying something like "change of plans", pretty weird I thought ?? Are you sure the K-Sport one is still going I'm sure I saw a post from the guy saying it had finished could be wrong though ?? Will probably go with Godspeed myself, am kinda having to ride out this month in terms of dosh and see how the funds are, got the anniversary coming up Craig.

Don Mega Posted June 7, 2008 Author Posted June 7, 2008 Me again Got my replacement discs today and fitted, its a lot better but theres still a lot of vibration when braking from high speeds, some slower but not so much.. Turns out i need to replace the rear discs and pads to! balls... The rears are currently the standard setup, is it worth taking the opportunity to upgrade these since i need to buy discs and pads anyway? I know Ian godney does a kit for the 2001 > 2 pots, haven't got any prices for standard replacements yet. What y'all think? any recommendations? Cheers D.
AlanG Posted June 8, 2008 Posted June 8, 2008 Where you getting the vibration? Through the steering wheel? Then it's fronts. Through the cabin, then it's rears. FWIW on my old car at 600 bhp, i still ran std rear discs and pads, with AP 6 pot 330mm DS2500 up front, no issues.
Don Mega Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 600bhp sounds fun! was that a classic? I can feel it through the steering wheel, the whole dash board vibrates really lol brand new discs and pads on it though although it felt ok this morning on the way to work but that was just a 10 min drive and no high speeds. Cheers D.

Cheers D. Yes, it was a classic. There's something going on in the front end if you're feeling it through the steering wheel. Did you clean up the hub faces and take the protective coating off the new discs before they were fitted? Edited June 9, 2008 by AlanG
