fudge Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Gary I have a P1 and I have been in the official P1 club/forum since Jan 06. P1 engines prove good if looked after and serviced. The most common prob is the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF). When these fail its pot luck if the engine goes or not. We tend to stay clear of "foam" based filters and opt for cotton filters. Roger Clark Motorsport sell a different MAF sensor that proves more reliable. Olly Clark showed me the MAF replacement details on their computer and 82 regular MAF sensors had failed opposed to just 8 failures of their one. Most guys I know change the MAF once a year and stay out of trouble. Get a P1. You will not be disappointed and it's a good base for high end modifications.

I showed my mate this post and he contacted them about it but they said they only sell the OE Maf ? Cheers

He sent them an email and they said they cost around 80 odd quid plus vat.. I'm sure he said that was for a OE one but i'd need to check..
Jolly Green Monster Posted June 12, 2008 Posted June 12, 2008 the P1 is basically an STi5 under the skin.. including the ecu map it runs.. the sti5 map is very close to the knuckle on uk fuel.. therefore there is not much room for error.. the maf sensors on the 99/00 can be fragile.. regular resetting of the ecu and checking for hunting idle can identify a failed maf sensor.. if looked after and treated right they are no more fragile than any other subaru engine.. I would get it mapped but then you would think I was just saying that.. but you then know it is safe on the fuel you use and it will have a health check before and during mapping etc.. Simon
