Gearbox Question...

Recommended Posts

Hello, as some of you ar awear i recently had my Gearbox go crunch/bang/& just made terrable noises.

After ringing around & talking to a few people about the best place to go,

i ended up going to a KNOW COMPANY (name i wont say, at this moment)

They had the car over nite,

FITTING

= Recon Gearbox (with warrantee)

= New Clucth

= New Flywheel

Costing me just under 1 months wages....

Car (gearbox) seemed fine on the way home as was driving with caution.

After a few day i noticed that from 1st to 2nd gear it crunched. spoke to a mate & he said ring the company...

So i did & this is the conversation i had.

Me = hello mate got problem with my gears

Him = Hello whats the problem

Me = it crunches from 1st to 2nd gear

Him = Arh yes thats a common fault with classic gearboxes,

Me = It wasnt doing it in my old box & that was broken

Him = try easing off the power before changing gear

Me = If i slow any more i wont get out of 1st gear

Him = Its probably that you have have Rubbish oil in your box, what you got in there,

Me = What ever you put in when you fitted it.

Him = try putting better synthetic oil in, as they will cure it.

Me = will it??

Him = i know you have a problem & we wont forget you.

That was the whole conversation we had.

Now what i want to know.

Should this be happening (crunching in to 2nd gear ONLY) never did it with my old box EVER (not even when on its way out)

Should i put better oil in OR should they have had done it?

& is it a common fault with classic gearboxes??

Should i take it back.

Please if you know where i went, DONT SAY on open thread....

hello mate, did they say how reconditioned the box was, was it stripped and checked or just an old box from a scrapped car with the oil changed. many companies idea of recon varies from a full strip and rebuild to wiping over the outside with a rag. if your not changing gear overly fast i would suspect a worn synchro between the gears which changing the oil will not cure, may only mask. find out from them the history of the old box and what the did to it before resale. good luck. if you not happy with the answer then take it back. :rotfl:

When i told him what box it was

He said i NEED TO BUILD one, for that model....

other than that i know nothing about the box, apart from £650 + vat (£115 ish)

is your car an ra model or a model with different gearing. even if it was built up from scratch, shouldn't crunch between gears. you said on you first post the box was warranted, if that's the case, take it back and don't leave until sorted. don't take any excuses like poor oil or running the box in. if the synchro hub is in a good condition it should do it's job and allow a smooth crunch free change.

ive got the same problem, mines been doing it for awhile and it will only get worse over time, my box started of doing it only between 1st and 2nd it now does it between 2nd and 3rd aswell will wait for it to go bang then decide what i want to do. Now when i had my clutch done last year the bloke who done it informed that you can either get the synchro's replaced of just replace the gearbox, both will roughly cost the same to do mainly due to the labour costs of stripping and assembling the gears, if yours was a decent recon box it wouldnt be crunching, i would take the box back and try and get a refund, and no amount of synthetic oil will stop it crunching. You should name and shame....

Before Naming and Shaming please inform the admin team so they can ask the supplier for there responses BEFORE being made public

It is only fair, whilst of course I do not doubt Baz's issues there are always two sides to any story

Thanks and of course I hope the issues are resolved amicably

Dont worry PHIL im not intending to NAME & SHAME like everyones wants me to,

i was after a second opinion,

For my own personal satifaction, that the SUPPLIER was telling the truth...

& it seems that from what people have said on BOTH THREADS, that its the SYNCRO'S not OIL..

so i hope to be getting it sortted.

Before i go to FRANCE in JULY.

You should just name and shame, providing the gearbox is from them.

You should let other people know, so they don't risk getting the same level of service as you have. Can't believe this is still going on? Why have you left it so long? Personally if you've tried everything you can i.e. ringing him everyday for a date to take it back etc. i'd of given the problem to someone else to sort out.

They are willing to do the gearbox as soon as Baz can get his car back

But when i 1st asked about taking my car up there to be SORTTED

i said i would turn up one morning & then they can sort it.

HE said QUOTE " YOU CANT JUST TURN UP YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN OPPOINTMENT"

I said QUOTE " can i have an oppointment please"

& that is what im waiting for???

i was in contact with him...

every week,

he wanted the car for for a whole week to repair.

i said but it only took you 6 hours to do it the 1st time why so long 2nd time

everything will be easier all new BOLTS/NUTS etc & shouldnt be grounded in & hard to remove.

he then offered to build a new box, & i go & see him & just replace it over (whilst i wait so to say)

& that is what im waiting for....

Also been out of work since APRIL so had no money to drive up there (PETROL)

But as ive recently been given WORK (cheers mate :D you know who)

im will to get my motor there NOW..

Plus i wasnt really driving the car much, as no need to when you sit at home filling in application forms.

FINALLY 2DAY i got this,

after 4 days of e-mails

& waiting 5 weeks before that...

Barry,

We have fresh stock of gearboxes coming from Japan.

The container ships today,

Tuesday and will be here in about a month. One of the problems that I face, is that the older boxes coming in are all worn out and to guarantee to get a better one for you is not easy.

With fresh low mileage stock from Japan we will have the bases covered and should be able to get you sorted once and for ever.

Remind me at the end of October and we'll have you in and get it done while you wait and drink our coffee.

Kind regards XXX
