allyburns Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Hi All, I've recently bought a 1994 WRX Sti which I am delighted about. Only problem is that I wasn't really thinking about the practicalities of carrying mountain bikes in/on it when I bought it. I can't fit a roof rack (can I?) and with the spoiler, I cant fit one of those strap on bike carriers. I was wondering if anyone has successfully fitted a tow bar to an Sti, and fitted one of those tow bar bike carriers. Think I will have issues with: Bumper Exhaust Spoiler! I saw a Subari in Edinburgh Reg R550 *** - A white one with lots of livery on it. It had a removable towbar. Does anyone know this person? Do they use it for carrying bikes, can imagine a Subaru towing a caravan? I would be most grateful for any help / advice. Cheers, Ally
Ross minimad Posted February 22, 2008 Posted February 22, 2008 Hi, I had (sold it a few weeks ago) a1998 UK impreza turbo with a towbar onto which I mounted a towbar fixed bike rack. there were no conflicts with the exhaust or the bumper and you could even open the boot with the rack + bikes on the car. The handle bar came within 6 inches of the top of the spoiler but this was OK and the two never banged into each other. Hope that helps.

I take it the towbar came with the car? Don't suppose you know who fitted it? Ally

Ally Yeah the towbar was on it when i bought it...... the towbar was made by Witter. You could fit it easily enough yourself probably....... I spent last saturday fitting a towbar to my new sensible post scooby car ( bmw 320d tourer) its not hard just a bit of common sense. Somebody asked me about the towbar a while back so i took these photos of it.......
seafar99 Posted February 23, 2008 Posted February 23, 2008 Ally , If your interested, once you've got your towbar fitted, i've got a bike carrier that clamps onto the 'towball' which will carry two bikes. Craig.
allyburns Posted February 25, 2008 Author Posted February 25, 2008 Cheers Ross, that's great info, I may make this my summer project then. Thanks for looking out the pictures too, much appreciated. Craig, thanks for the offer of the carrier, I'll get in touch and see if you still have it for sale if my project is a success! And while I'm here I'll thank the forum for helping me find the answers again! Ally
Ian Coulter Posted February 26, 2008 Posted February 26, 2008 You can also fit roof rack bars to take bike carriers. Thule do a modular system where you buy the bars, foot pack and fitting kit separately. This means you can swap it from car to car at minimum cost. I only had to buy a new fitting kit (£20) to swap mine over from my classic to a newage. I therefore have a classic fitting kit available if someone needs it to go with bars & foot pack. This saves you drilling holes to mount a tow bar if you don't actually need it for towing anything. I also prefer having bikes up on the roof out of the way, but that's a personal thing. Ian
