20withascooby Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 right im lokoing at getting diff headers but im confused iver seen ported headers unequal length headers group ss headers im confused what are the differences and what a re the gains like ??
mikkers Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 Iv been looking at headers for my newage and it looks like it could be a minefield. They range in price from about £250 from flat4.co.uk to over £800 for ceramic heat wrapped ones. They do apparantly need to be heat wrapped, either with incredibly expensive ceramic or with tape, which is a fraction of the price but dosnt last anywhere near as long. Standard headers, and most aftermarket ones are unequal length and this is responsible for the subaru burble, you will lose this with equal headers. Some ebay sellers claim 30bhp, which I think is totally optimistic. If you are up for a journey scoobyclinic do header and up pipe fitted for £500+vat. If you can fit them yourself great, otherwise its a lengthy job with lots of labour charges, figure 4 hours plus.
HOL Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I know someone ocal who ran HKS headers unwrapped for 4 years without a problem. The concept is to stop the generated heat from damaging wiring etc. Although some people will say that 'someone' told them it was a performance enhancement. 20BHP was the normal upgrade for tubular headers. 10BHp fir the standard ones if they are ported out just enough to releive the flow, but not slow it down by enlarging the bore size. (its all abbout taking out the 'step ups' in the direction of flow where the parts are clamped together, but not the 'step downs' if that makes sense? Unequal keeps the chugga-chugga burble, equal length looses it.
Montythegod Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I got the equal length headers from Powerstation I believe, with integrated uppipe so bu**ered if i want to change the uppipe. I lost a bit of top end power but gained a load of midrange torque and also lost the low scooby burble. and due to lack of heat wrap managed to melt a few bits of plastic underneath, they have been cut out now so no problem Only problem was they had slip joint and eventually started to rattle, so out came the welder and no more slip joint I was also advised to steer clear of any cheap headers with a flexi joint as they tend to blow the flexi joint.....
richard Posted February 20, 2008 Posted February 20, 2008 I have a set of GT Spec ceramic coated headers on my new age sti, unequal length, sound fantastic and gave a good performance gain with the remap. I used mocom racing for them. (would stay clear of cheap copys on ebay)
20withascooby Posted February 20, 2008 Author Posted February 20, 2008 dazz what are the ones at api for 150?????
