B9RY C Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 I've got an STI V4 and yesterday I had probs re-starting the car after I had stopped to go to the shop (I had been driving for 20 mins). After about 5-6 attempts the car started. Its not the fuel pump as it has been changed recently and I can hear it start when I turn on the ignition. The car always starts first time every time when it is cold but thats twice (in 4 months) that it has failed to start when I've stopped. I'm gonna be selling the car soon and want to make sure theres no probs before I do so. Anybody got any ideas? Cheers Barry
iain_ogston Posted January 29, 2008 Posted January 29, 2008 sounds like classic symptoms of a cam or crank sensor on the way out. These are magnetic hall effect sensors which degrade over time. I had this problem on my 95 model, and it got progressively worse to the point car wouldn't start at all when warm (even after a 1/4 mile drive to nearest petrol pump). Car would start 1st time when cold. I admit I was lazy and just kept bumping up the cranking times on the PFC to get it to start
B9RY C Posted January 29, 2008 Author Posted January 29, 2008 Cheers for replying. Is it an expensive fix? sounds like classic symptoms of a cam or crank sensor on the way out. iain_ogston Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 new sensor from subaru is in region of a hundred quid or thereabouts I think. Sure some scrapper/breaker can get you one cheaper if it turns out to be the problem.
the squiggle Posted January 30, 2008 Posted January 30, 2008 Another likely culprit is the temp sensor When this goes wrong the ECU thinks the engine is stone cold and adds in extra fuel to get the thing going
