Remap Help

Hi,

As you can probably see from my post count I am fairly new to this site but have owned my Subaru for over a year. It is an 05 WRX SL and is completely standard at the moment which was fine but now fancy a bit more power. As it will be coming up for its third birthday early next year I fancy treating it to some modifications and a remap (hopefully by Andy F).

Unfortunately I haven't a clue if there are any other modifications I should do before I arrange to get it remapped (I heard re-mapping a standard car is a waste of time)?

Can anyone advise what sort of modifications I should be considering before a re-map? I presume I should be getting rid of the standard exhaust and replacing it with S/S one and possible getting a new air filter - does anyone have any advice on what mods work well with my car?

Sorry for all the questions but I am completely clueless to say the least.

Cheers,

Peter

When I spoke to Andy about remapping my std 06 STi, he said that the downpipe in them (not sure if yours is the same) is really restrictive, so I'd say that the best option would be to do the full exhaust at the same time as the remap at the very least.

As you can see the standard exhaust is a wee bit restrictive

A good list of mods (money depending) are

: Exhaust (I have a Meercat one and swear by it)

: Headers and up pipe - there are conflicting reports as to which is best, standard ported ones or aftermarket (I have GT spec II headers and up pipe)

: uprated fuel pump - Bosch, Walbro or similar

: induction - depends on what sort of power you are looking for, the green panel filter or similar is good but I prefer the APS inner wing induction kit (cos ive got one...lol)

: Possibly look into a larger turbo VF 34 / 35 are simple upgrades that will let you run circa 350bhp and are relativly cheap to pick up, the other option is to speak to Andy F, his TD04H is a very good turbo for fast spool up and at a guess good for about 330bhp (might be wrong) or an Andy Forrest 20g, which still has good spool up and is good for up to about high 300's on road fuel. Andy's Website is far more informative than I on the turbo subject!!!!!!!

All of the above can be found 2nd hand if you have enough time which will save you a fair few pounds

oh yea and an Andy F map!!!!

or you can sell your car and buy mine which will be for sale within the month and it has 370bhp and 364lbs-ft of torque and is a 05 sti uk :P

Really depends what you want to go for. I use the car everyday and do 50 miles a day so didn't want it too loud or mad power that might affect reliability.

Went for second hand scoobyworld system with deresonated centre section but left up and down cats in place. Gt an intercooler Y pipe on Andy's recommendation and then had the map done.

273bhp and even more torque, better than an sti of the same year (standard) with the benefit of a dual map so i can knock the boost back on motorways. All in £750

Welcome btw!

first of all howdie

what you need to do is sit down and figure out how much you have to spend and what sort of thing your doing with the car

as in, are you going to use it for everyday use, weekend b road bomber or bit of both

how much do you realy have spare ? best advice is, spend as much time looking into the mods you can and dont rush into ANYTHING untill your happy with what you expect to get

because i'll bet my bottom dollar that you could turn round the morow and get a bunch or stuff done to your car

but

give it a few months and you'll be after more power !!!!

bet there a few folk sitting reading this thinking, yep, been there !!

take your time and maybe drop a e-mail to Andy Forrest or talk to a few garages that do a lot of the cars on here

the likes of AWD in perth and the likes

they are more than happy to talk you through your needs and what you can and should be looking for

hope this helps

Cheers for the replies guys - is really useful.

Like fivetide I use my car almost everyday for a 60 odd mile commute so don't want anything too loud or with mental power just a bit of an increase in performance.

Suppose I just need to think about what I can afford and whether to go for brand new or second hand parts (not sure I can sell a £1k full exhaust system to the missus that easily).

I'm like yourself, the car is a daily driver and while I don't want anything too OTT noise wise (last scoob was quite loud and it got to be a bit of a PITA TBH on long runs... droned a bit too much). As to whether I wouldn't want anything with mental power... hmmm... not too sure I'm with you on that one :D

What I would want, if I was able to have a mental power one, would be a switchable map, so I could have it std in the winter when the extra power is likely to be more of a hassle and then full power in the summer time :(

Oh, and like yourself, trying to get a £1k exhaust and then a £600+ remap past the wife in a single go is going to be tough, if not damn near impossible :P

BTW a fyll Decat Meercat exhaust costs about £550 ish and can be made to as loud or as quiet as you would like.

AndyF remap under £600

so what are you waiting for.??!! :(

Would want it with a sports cat though, which always seems to bump the price up a bit.

Meercat build the system the way you want though don't they, so if you wanted a sports cat you could have it "installed" wherever you wanted in the system couldn't you?

I had been looking more at the Miltek systems originally but the Meercat ones sound like they are pretty damn good as well.

Oh, and waiting 'cos atm with xmas there isn't enough for the remap on it's own let alone an exhaust as well :D Next year possibly though :(

My exhaust was £150 secondhand + £40 to fit ay Hypertech. As a SS system rust/rot wasn't an issue (did have to go to Newcastle for it though) with the SIDC group buy on the remap and £90 for the Y pipe etc (plus some helpful free fitting from another member)

Can be done on a budget if needed!

Sports cat would add about £280 to the above price but it does include fitting, the sport cat would go in the downpipe tho.

Hi,

First off, can't believe it has been over a year since I first posted this topic and I still haven't had my car mapped (time flies when you are having fun)!! Anyway spent the last year replacing just about everything else on my car so have decided I am DEFINITELY going to get it mapped in the next few months.

As you can probably tell from my first post I am mechanically incompetent so don't really have clue what I need to do in preparation for this (despite everyone's helpful comments). So far the only modification my car has had is the backbox replaced with TSL Group N one so from my understanding/reading other people's posts I need to get the following parts before it is worthwhile getting it mapped:-

Uprated Fuel Pump (Warlboro 255 seems to be a popular one)

Samco Turbos Hose Set?

Decatted Up-pipe - has anyone got any recommendations on what to change this for on 05 Blobeye?

Replacement centre section for my exhaust - again has anyone got any recommendations on what to get to connect to my TSL backbox (Meerkat perhaps)?

Apologies for all the questions but have been searching through previous posts and can see people who have been in the same position (getting their first remap) but can never work out what parts they have bought/had fitted before getting it mapped.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

I'm in the process of modding my dad's WRX MY05 to around 290/300(my target), I've managed to get an STi up pipe(£50), STi intercooler(£150) and hopefully will manage to pick up a Prodrive down-pipe to keep it MOT friendly, along with a Walbro fuel pump it should reach the targets on the tiny TD04. I don't think it'll give anymore on that turbo. I'm using my standard Spec C exhaust from the downpipe back, so can't comment on an exhaust for you. I'm mapping the car myself using OS, so all in it's probably only costing £250-300.

Going a stage further, you can pick up a VF34/35 from the STi for about £250(STi IC essential) that will see a nice safe 320/330 with the same(ish) torque, you'll also need 550cc injectors and I'd personally add a 3 Port Boost Solenoid. Not knowing what the standard brakes are capable of I'd probably look to do some sort of upgrade at that power level.

Cheers,

Paul

I have a 54reg Blobeye and have just recently basically gone through AndyF's Level1 with a bit of Level2 :

2.5" exhaust system turbo back, with sportscat downpipe (part heat wrapped). Decat up-pipe (heat wrapped). Green Panel filter. Walbro fuel pump. Samco Y pipe. There's similar ways to squeeze a bit more power out but that worked for me cost and MOT wise.

Estimated 280bhp/300lbs. Next stage would be some STi items to take me to aroundabout 340bhp.

Hi,

I've got an 05 WRX Blobeye as well.

As other people said in your original post, I followed Andy F's website for Stage 2A.

Got the Walbro fuel pump.

IIRC, you might just need the Samco hose from the intercooler? Someone else will correct me.

I've kept my Prodrive back box but got a Meercat sports cat with wider mouth downpipe, decatted Meercat up pipe and centre section. They would make theirs fit yours....if it isn't a standard size?

Got the Y piece when I replaced the TMIC with an Sti one... a bit safer I was told.

I then got 550cc injectors and a VF34 turbo before getting the remap.

Now I'm looking at 334bhp/335lb ft.

On top of that...I also got the STi8 bonnet scoop (the big one) with undertray to get the best out of the TMIC.

Thanks for the advice.

Am now in the process of writing a "to buy" list so will see how I get on and hopefully get it mapped in the next few months.

Cheers,

Peter
