Baz69birds Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 Ive got a noise Can anyone help me?? Now this has only happened since ive been back from holiday (& after the car got trashed) & ive only driven it 4 times since ive been back... Only noticed noise apon having to boot it to get out of trouble on a roundabout, its a WINEING, NOISE (a bit like if you are decelarating down the gears BUT louder) Now this noise was very loud (after hitting about 6000rpm in 1st gear) & then was constant throughout the rest of the journey home. When i started car up again a few days later & took it for a spin, NO NOISE, then i put my foot down to see if it was still there & Yes it came back.. Same as before.. 3rd time of driving No noise at all 4th time of driving it was show a garage technition the noise.. and it didnt want to make the noise even after booting it. & then it did, & this time every time i put my foot on the clutch the noise seemed to get quiet/ ease off?? But was really loud inhigh revs in 1st & 2nd & 3rd gear. But very quiet in 4th & 5th. but still there. The mechanic says its NOT the TURBO (as he knows that noise) The Mechanic says its NOT the Diff The Mechanic says it maybe the gear box?? The Mechanic says it maybe the clutch?? But to be 100% honest he doesnt really know. If you need any more info Please ask & i'll try & help.
col_2 Posted October 15, 2007 Posted October 15, 2007 i have had that problem once, but im not sure if it could be the same, as i had it in a ford focus but its worth checking, it was a wheel bearing, as they get hot they get noisier, just an idea!!!
Baz69birds Posted October 15, 2007 Author Posted October 15, 2007 it does get noiser when i get faster But if i put my foot on the clutch it nearly goes, If it was a wheel bearing it would stay @ the same level.
mean greenie Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 sounds like it could be the clutch release bearing if noise goes when clutch depressed. also might be the spigot bush in the flywheel that the g/box input shaft goes into, (i'm assuming it's that type of g/box, never done a subaru before) had a problem with these on some of the land rovers i have the pleasure of working on , cured problem with new spigot fitted dry.
wedmonds1 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 I agree. Wheel baring.... My mate had the same problem on one of his cars. It got stupid loud on accelaration and only found the problem ones we had it up on the ramp. We jacked it up a number of times and could not see the problem. Baz69birds Posted October 16, 2007 Author Posted October 16, 2007 I DO NOT THINK ITS A WHEEL BEARING, as i drove to my mums (Birmingham) & apon booting it, it started to wine & then all the way there, After having it parked up over the weekend & not used, then drove home & DID NOT boot it, & it didnt make the noise at all, (3+hour drive) Had it had been a wheel bearing apon warming up it would have made the noise???
Dalthegooner Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 Due to the fact that it only does it when you boot it I would say it points more to the gearbox rather than the release bearing.. If it was the release bearing then it would make a noise at any temperature, whereas the more you boot it the hotter and thinner the gearbox oil gets and noises that aren't normally there can occur. In my opinion the gearbox is starting to show wear, although it may be an age before it actually goes. I'd change the gearbox oil. It could cure your problems for a while.
Deano 666 Posted October 16, 2007 Posted October 16, 2007 it sounds to me that the bearings are worn in the gearbox, when the car is driven normally it does not put as much load on the bearins, so the noise is not as loud as it would be when it is driven hard. Try changing the gearbox oil to a thicker grade, this will take up slack in the drive.(also check the magnet on the drain plug for metal shavings, ie bits of bearing) if it works than you will know to start saving you pennys for a gearbox re- build. hope this helps you to pin point the problem. Dean.

kip Posted October 17, 2007 Posted October 17, 2007 sounds like a gearbox baz as this is what happened to me when i broke mine. Well the 3 times i broke it lol

Baz69birds Posted October 21, 2007 Author Posted October 21, 2007 Sorry to steal my thread back ..... But have been told by many people that this could be the release bearing in the CLUTCH??? Now is this replaceable!!! Or is it a NEW CLUTCH?? & if so how much is NEW CLUTCH?
mean greenie Posted October 21, 2007 Posted October 21, 2007 if it's the release bearing or g/box it's a box out job regardless i'm afraid mate. if you've gone through the hassle of dropping the box then i'd allways fit a full new clutch kit wether the clutch looks worn or not. good time with the box on the floor for somebody to have a look at it. think there might be a group buy going on for clutches and flywheels on here at the moment. might be worth a look. i'm sure i recall granby having a clutch and flywheel on his, so i would ask him regarding costs. all the best, matt

Now is this replaceable!!! Or is it a NEW CLUTCH?? & if so how much is NEW CLUTCH? Hi Barry Clutch bearings are not replaceable, becuase it is attatched to the clutch cover so you would have to remove the whole of it to try and replace it. So easier to get a new clutch.
Baz69birds Posted October 22, 2007 Author Posted October 22, 2007 O.K STUPID IS HERE o.k after listerning to everyone, & Having NOT driven it for ages. I thought i would check GEARBOX OIL. & guess what!!!! It didnt have any, Well it did but was below the Min line.. Could this be a Part of my Noise??? Or all of it???
granby Posted October 22, 2007 Posted October 22, 2007 Yep could definitely be the problem but the only way to find out for sure is fill her up and take it for a spin
Baz69birds Posted October 22, 2007 Author Posted October 22, 2007 Really?? Thank you for letting me know that
Baz69birds Posted October 24, 2007 Author Posted October 24, 2007 I have now filled it up, & taken it for a SPIN.. & i cant here the noise, BUT!!! i could boot it like i originally did (6000rpm) i only reached 5000rpm But no noise & did drive it for about 20min.
Deano 666 Posted October 25, 2007 Posted October 25, 2007 you may be lucky with just topping it up, but i still recomend you drain the gearbox oil out, and renew with fresh oil.
Baz69birds Posted December 15, 2007 Author Posted December 15, 2007 FIXED Just to let you know, that the noise was sortted by ESSEX SUBARU BREAKERS in under 2 minutes.. Power Steering Fluid Low.
