Engine Light

Engine light came on today. Car seems to run fine but obviously something is wrong. I live in Dunfermline and car is 51 WRX Turbo. Did flash once or twice last month for about 20 seconds but went off only seemed to happen when accelerating from 2-3K in 4th gear. Obviously dont want to drive the car too far so any recomendations on where to take it for the best advice at the right price would be greatly appreciated.

Take it to a Main Dealer and ask them to check the code stored in the ECU.

Dont ask them to fix it just to tell you what the code is. If it something simple get the dealer to sort it but if it is something a bit more technical, post the results up here and i am sure a WRX owner will advise accordingly as to the best place to repair the problem

Thanks for the advice. I've got 2 options take it to either Cupar or Falkirk both roughly the same distance or buy OBDII cable around £45 and check it myself on laptop. Has anyone ever used these cables and software. I'm electronic test engineer and it all seems fairly straightforward plus I'll have the kit for any future problems (Don't intend ever buying anything other than a Subaru again). Again any further comments would be useful.

Will let you know how I get on. Garage were going to charge to read error code and then re-charge me to reset after I had carried out repair if I had done so on my own rather than let them fix it. So unit should pay for itself and I'll have the kit for future problems. Plus I don't fancy driving the car 40 miles to the garage when I don't know whats wrong.
