PWRC: McRae on course for title Australia - Subaru - Alister McRae - 13/11/2004 12:15:32 Production World Rally Championship ace Alister McRae is on-track to take both the class win and the 2004 drivers? title on tomorrow?s final leg after ending today with a 1m48s lead over his closest rally and championship rival, Niall McShea. Local driver Dean Herridge is the top Group N driver in his Subaru, but is closely followed by McRae and fellow local runner Chris Atkinson. Third in Group N is PWRC frontrunner Xavier Pons, but the Spaniard has used up all his six nominated rounds this year and is therefore out of the title fight. McShea is sixth in the Group N standings, but second in the points-scoring PWRC race, ahead of fellow Subaru runner Toshihiro Arai. Mitsubishi ace Jani Paasonen has suffered a poor second leg and is now fifth in the PWRC points-scoring rankings and pretty much out of the title fight. On current form, McRae will end the rally with 36 points, while McShea will be on 35 and Paasonen will be on 33. Pons will end the season with 27 points and Arai will be on 26. ?I?m just trying to concentrate on the championship now,? McRae said. ?The local boys can do what they want. We?ve been running yesterday?s tyres so that we can use the new ones tomorrow. My biggest fear is punctures. We?re quite comfortable, though, and the tyres are good.?

Subaru driver and title outsider Toshihiro Arai started the day leading the class from fellow Subaru driver McRae, with current points leader Paasonen down in fifth in his Mitsubishi ? a position that left the Finn?s hopes of taking the crown rather bleak. As the stages progressed, though, McRae moved to the head of the field while Paasonen moved up to third behind Proton driver Karamjit Singh. Niall McShea - second in the points - is currently fifth, while Arai has dropped to seventh. The 10 points that McRae is on course for would leave him with a tally of 36 for the season, while Paasonen would have just 35, McShea would have 31 and Arai would end the year on 22. All it take, though, is for McRae, Singh or Paasonen to slip up, and the outcome could be very different indeed.
