  1. That means they still they'll wriggle off the dash and nick the sweet alloys.......No wonder the car is fully alarmed Where the hell did you find that out ? It that's the case then I reckon the exhaust pipes were sculpted by naked Tahitian babes on a beach workshop in the Maldives where they have no safety kit to wear and get horny at the sight of blue skinned Scotsmen......I wish ! CS
  2. I had the displeasure of experiencing SPECS last weekend, findings as follows :- - resultant blood pressure rise when i clocked the fisrt warning sign - everyone went @ 60 on the dualler section even though it's a NSL road at that point i.e 70 mph limit - w.r.t above I got paranoid and went @ 60 mph too incase i had misinterpreted something - on the single lane section down to Girvan a lorry was doing 40 mph. NO-ONE would overake it so everyone went at the lorrys speed for 20 mins ! - these yellow vultures will never beat the shiny ersed traffic cops - after Girvan en-route to Newton Stewart you'll encounter no optimax for miles but some of the best roads that the SIDC recently went on. - the Micro Road Pilot was ace and picked up the vultures no problemo. Weirdly it would have beeped the entire length of the SPECS section to keep you aware. Luckily it has a mute function but the screen flashed away to keep you vigilant - GPS & car tax per mile is undoubtedly on the way Cal ( hater of SPECS and the nanny state)
  3. OMG ! this will be a crackin' series me finks ! VBH gives me wood, Tiff is a legend and i love their test drives & Anglesey tests. As for that Aston - the sound of that thing from the roadside gave me goosepimples. That what I'm talkin' about Roll on the next one Cal p.s not too sure on Crusty the Clowns banter but that Sotheby's auction was full o' classy burds !
  4. I'd prefer a towel to get the custard pie off my Evo face
  5. ! That patter was 100% my own I'll have you know ......but it was more the actual content that I was interested in ! Not only that it IS a true story and was a tremenous day especially when it was funded by expenses @ 40p a mile Expect EVO stickers in yer mags in the next few months..... Re :- "TV personality and wanna be motoring 'hack'"...........I'm sadly unqualified as I'm lacking the all important Saint Tropez coupon best bit about the A82 is along the side of Loch Ness ( very sweeping with nice cambers and newish asphalt) and then the hairpins which speak for themselves Cal
  6. Ian G & chris - I have only decatted the centre pipe at the bottom end of the exhaust >> see below So I still have up-pipe ( which heavily limits boost pressure & thwarts EGT ) and the downpipe which is very restrictive too. I would describe the situation I have now as being equivalent to when i had the H&S downpipe without the remap. i.e more pull low down the rev range. Brian - any more details on the sports cat ? sounds like a good idea. Gordy - Direct quote from Andy F's website states " fully decated 2 ½? bore system is adequate up to 350 bhp. After this a 3? system is recommended. Sports cat systems are available but ultimately still limit power compared to a fully decated setup " Colin - yeah tell me about it. The sound of yer turbo spooling up on that run was immense. The exhaust @ KH is outta this world though ! Cal
  7. I do believe I've popped my cherry as of this post !! Here's to another 1000 quality posts ........... Cal
  8. Welcome to our crackin' maritime climate my coilover packing amigo ! See you at a meet soon Any mair pics from the marathon sesh ? CS
  9. a virtual custard pie ............... ! Having spent a while compling it and no-one reading it I thought i may as well broadcast it here......Maybe it'll get in next month but i doubt it ! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi, I have been meaning to compile this e-letter for over a year but house moves and a hectic work life have hindered progress. I'd be extremely grateful if you would publish this as I believe there will be numerous readers out there who can relate to my tale. I appreciate it's on the long side so won't take offence it's edited accordingly ! Leaving a sticky marque ... Having been an avid subscriber of evo for several years now it suddenly dawned on me that something has been missing from your damn fine publications of late. I recall a dry sunny induction friendly winters day a few a years back when I was enduring a not so laborious "business" journey down the infamous A82. Prior to tackling this joyous stretch of tarmac, I remembered reading one of your scintillating articles, detailing an early morning Porsche 911 assault on the aforementioned road. Despite travelling in a lesser weapon, the Civic Type R I was commuting in at the time provided me with a glorious chance to recreate this Stuttgart'esque episode. Armed with some high octane fuel and fresh defensive driving knowledge from a recently Honda MAC course, I took great delight in effortlessly reading the road, safely picking off mundane motorists and generally make great haste. All was going swimmingly until an Italian honed snout appeared rapidly filled my rear view. Closer inspection revealed a F355 in hot pursuit.... Fully anticipating an ageing status obsessed director at the wheel, I opted to toy with the pursuer and test his ability to negotiate some imminent hairpins. He duly accepted the challenge and after manically rifling through the 6 speed box and caning the fade free brakes of the Type R to there full potential, I was forced to into humble submission. Which brings me to the topic of your recent omissions. Once the prancing horsed had blown past the sleek flanks of the Civic, a familiar decal in the Fezza's rear window was instantly recognisable . It was only then I released that the occupant was a fellow evo aficionado. A discrete yet cherished evo sticker gave the game away. I then tailed the subscriber back into drudgery of suburbia sensing a mutual respect between us. These window stickers were sparingly issued a few years ago and I've since replaced the CTR with a Subaru WRX so this sticker resides with the CTR's new owner ! So in the interest of a) obtaining a fresh one for the new chariot free advertising for yourselves and c) providing a visual indication of a fellow enthusiast whilst en-route, please issue the masses with this cheap but invaluable resource. Having accumulated more points than a sheriffs badge of late, I feel my sticker maybe best be accompanied by a Road Angel. Best Regards Calum Shand, Aberdeen ( address supplied ) Keep up the good work folks, this months issue was tremendous. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Anyone else won anything from these sort of articles ? I know Douster has an EVO sticker - i see them as a discrete advert for petrolheads telepathy BUT - they did send me two new stickers in the post within 2 days of sending so they obviously read it and thought i was worthy Cheers Cal
  10. PPP is new intercooler hose, centre decat, backbox & maybe fuel pump plus revised ECU I think CGS
  11. Fuel pump only really needed on bigger horse applicatins but would'nt harm to do ! ( i think .....) Speak to Higgy cos he was stung a tad with those athletic sports cats 3" system will help though for info :- Multiply By To obtain foot-pounds 1.3558 Newton-meters ~~ On this basis I got 311 Nm torque ~~ Awaits Squirrel or someone with more knowlegde to help with Brians plight CS
  12. << I like the graphs Cal, Whats the score with that wee dip in torque on both curves between 3740 and 4750 mate? >> I wondered about that too but based on the below it seems kinda normal ? ( bear in mind that the below is for the post 02 model and so is some 10 bhp up for starters ) Also units below are Nm for torque
  13. yip, great for knowledge meets and of course the Synonyms: banter chaff2, josh, kid, rag2, razz, rib These verbs mean to poke fun good-humoredly: bantered with her colleagues during a coffee break; chaffed him for forgetting the appointment; joshed her brother about his strange new haircut; kidded me about my outfit; ragged her for being so stubborn; razzed the teammate who missed the shot; ribbing a friend for being in love.
  14. << Looks like it was still increasing at 6000rpm where the run was terminated ? It would have been good to compare the drop off in power at high rpm which is far less abrupt now. >> Hey Andy - Wallace reckoned that it had been purposefully been run rich at the top-end so protect the limiter ( e.g. more fuel was dumped @ 6k ) and as such they didn't want to take it further. I'm probably not explaining this very well and Gav would be able to give a better reasoned explanation. I don't doubt either of you and I'm still happy with the results When we came off the throttle @ 6k on the RR there was quite a lot of soot dumped from the exhaust which is what initially drew Gavs attention. Either way I ain't fussed and I explained to Gav ( poorly likely) that you had discussed EGT's, higher boost and associated rich fuelling. I did state that I rarely ent over 6k anyway so as i have already said I'm happy as larry << The uppipe cat imposes a limit on the maximum EGT that is safe to run, this in turn requires the fueling to be rich at higher boost. (if you melt the pre turbo cat, the turbo eats cat at 120,000 rpm) >> Yip, doesn;t sound pretty especially after you showed me that blades that had met the lamda sensor shroud. I think decat will come in time once diplomacy talks have resumed with the other half << The uppipe and downpipe cats cost approx 20-30bhp and similar torque. >> I could be doing with those ponies ! Thanks again Andy and thanks for explaining things too - twas a long day between travel, sleep en-route & concentration Andy >> Calum
  15. This stuff cracks me up but i wish we had two sections in here ( scottishscoobies )......."general" & "car" This is not a dig at anyone - it's just that i struggle to catch up if i've been away for > 3 days I know Dougster, Cameron & Wullie are on the case and that they are also volunteers so I will wait patiently and praise em ' for their efforts to date in the mine time Cheers Cal
  16. Thought that might have been you ! That was about 0645 hrs and i couldn't see jack in the rearview mirror until i saw a flash of a silver WRX I don't know those roads in the slightest other than the fact I use the A1 bypass en route to whoop ass at the Tranent karting
  17. Scenario :- - Weather - the WORST ???floodin' in the East - Arrival @ Port Seton ? 0700 hrs ( 2 hrs early !! I was keen to avoid traffic but overestimated, sought Optimax & fodder, read EVO - Sleep - hee haw for 48 hours prior to arrival due to work commitments & imbalance of leisure time ( i.e staying up late to compensate for working long hourse! e.g watch Fifth gear @ 0100 & researching remaps ) - Reason for visit - seeking a PPP-a-like for my WRX, more ponies, torque and generally satisfying my modding epidemic ( £1300 blown this month ) - AF's Premises - undisclosed but bugger to find @ 0700hrs until the main man arrives ! Otherwise, heavenly and full of bits that induce nudgers - State of mind - bricking it yet excited, keen to meet Andy, knackered, apprehensive, awe @ the 210mph beast, more intrepidation & urge to buy hybrid turbo's Preparation - Inform Andy of wish list - economy map & b-road / track day map, on optimax, low down grunt of key importance, ability to urinate on Elises @ KH - Mods - K&N panel, Samco hoses on intercooler, Scoobysport BB, afterburner centre decat & unresonated section, Turbo XS RFL VTA DV. - Previous results - 213 ft/lbs @ 3800 rpm ........230 bhp @ 6000 rpm - not too shabby but could do better / torque gash - Checks - basemap, laptop, licenses, EGT & AFR sensors, det cans for 'drews in-car Dj stints , alert driver, puddle avoidance sonar on max. range. Onroad Mapping - assess health of chariot off boost - sort out the economy map ( 0.6 bar .....) - ascertain optimum parameters for "fun-mode" ( 1.1 bar - cannot go more due to up-pipe causing limiting EGT temps - fully expected and I knew decats were ultimately required - still happy - load car on and off boost at variety of revs - WOW !!! Andy hits all important demister button to go into fun mode and the WRX feels alive. - perform final checks and return to rendezvous point to chat & wait for arrival of Bing ( Stevie Crosbie with recent mods) Andy F Review - dedicated, honest, knowledgeable, flexible, trustworthy and generally a millers swilling scooby worshipper who reportedly shares a kingsize Scooby Doo duvet with his very understanding wife - in summary, he's like Ronseal - does what it says on the tin but with octane additives Head home to ABZ - despite being in boost investigation mode, smoking every rep.mobile at the Forth road bridge tolls, and generally being hyper active at the prospect of new lease of life I'm totally bushed and pull over for 15 minute kip before Dundee due to 3 near misses where I drift off temporarily at wheel. Wallace Performace RR session - due to kid like excitement and cat-like curiosity i head straight up to gav Wallace for Dastek RR sesh ( where previously had been on rollers ). Gav was very accomodating and was about to shut up shop before I arrived so mucho thanks to him. Took camcorder to record session and new found Scoobysport high rev. growl For the record according to Top Gear Mag Oct 2002 Edition - the 02 WRX has the following figures - 0-60 mph in 6.3 secs // 215 bhp @ 5800 revs // 215 ft/lbs @ 3600 // max claimed speed of 143 mph The Results Hope these pics bloomin' work ........250 bhp @ 6000 rpm & 230 ft.lbs torque @ 5200 rpm Basically a gain of 35 bhp & 15 ftlbs torque on standard Not enough to give the big power boys a semi but makes me a very happy chappy after only owning her for 10 months. Pre & Post map curves are superimposed due to versatile Dastek software and Gav's database of previous results. Only bummer is that the pre-run was in 3rd gear and post run in 4th but just a minor oversight on my part. In Summary I am exceedingly happy and must have hit my demister button 20 times on a 2.5hr journey for a laff. Had a run against a new style Golf Gti from a wet roundabout up to 70 mph on the A90. My car pulled harder and earlier than it ever did before . I love the fact that you can plant the foot down earlier on corners exits and really like the in-gear pull on motorways for overtaking. Great fun to hit the fun button if some sits up yer erse. Money well spent ? I strongly believe so !! Now I need to fight of the full decat demons and visit Andy again ! With a house move impending there ain';t much scope for the foreseeable future....... The economy map is very nice for chilled driving & motorway cruising So.......the only question remains is will I be able to resist the SIDC KH all-dayer after my wallets taken a beasting of late ! Many thanks to....... Andy Forrest and his immense ECU fettling skills, Russell (WUZ) & Marc for garage services and dodgy banter, Hi Soob for allround advice, Playsatan & Wilkie for giving me a power urge after rapid pax laps last spring, Bing for his banter and chat & over 2.5 hrs of telephone calls in the last 48 hrs ...........and all of the rest of you guys for being the mod whores that you are..... It's been emotional Cheers Cal ( SIDC tatooed in my left ass cheek ) p.s this message dragged on a bit ! whoops EDIT - WORKING ON THE PICS !
  18. These are a great investment if you haul lots of crap around in your boot or visit doggin' sites like Gumball () I have one and think they stop stuff sliding around
  19. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT ANDY !!! very emotional I had 5 appearances from my goodself into the bargain Thanks again ! Cal
  20. My samco hoses is coming via courier tommorow so if I have the equivalent of WRX PPP power by luncthime Wednesday I'll be well chuffed. If i get STi power then even better but i can't see me breaking 260bhp. We'll see what happens..........it's an expensive journey !
  21. Can't wait to get home and watch this !! Thanks for this Andy !
  22. Nope that Dave Clutterbuck (Clutdav) and he has a Wallace map for his K&N induction etc ....... Cheers Cal
