  1. Mike, as all people have said, start off small and work your way up.

Im 26 with 8 years NCB and ive got a GB270, dont know if you know much about the different models so maybe you dont know what a GB270 is.

Anyway, i started off with a wee Pug 106, i then spent a bit of money on alloys, window tints, exhaust etc and i dread to think how much i spent on it, then sold it and got a Corsa SXI, did the same thing with that, then had an MG ZR (worst car i ever had), then my first Scooby (P1), then a Corsa VXR, then went back to a Scooby (my first GB270), i then had a Transit Sport van, then a BMW E46 M3, then got a show winning concours condition Escort Cosworth but sold that to come back to the Scooby (my current GB270) and tbh ive always found the Scooby to be the best cars ive owned.

The reason ive had so many vehicles in the past 10 years is coz i tend to get bored easy but after coming back to my current Scooby i dont wana get rid of it, ive had it about 9 months, the longest ive had a car for ages and im gona keep it for a long time.

To give you an idea on my insurance costs, im paying £700 a year for mine but when i had my P1 i was roughly £1500 but coz i wanted the car i payed it, i was 21 back then.

Theres no way i could have afforded to insure a Scooby at 16 or 17.

Its true mate, some things are worth waiting for so just bide your time and you will get one eventually.

  2. yes m8 it is. quality is good only prob is u will need jubilee clips as the standard clips and strong enough imho.

2 of the hoses in the kit i don`t have a clue where they go so they r in the shed, another hoses i was unsure of so i used it for the coolant bottle i would say for the cost compaired to other brands they r superb

Any idea if these would fit a hawkeye guys?

    Cheers.

  3. Thanks for the replies so far guys

I checked out the GB270, not keen on the grills at the front (yep im that picky lol) and also no blue STI interior =( The rear spoiler is something different though which i quite like. Still looking like an STI at this point.

    some more questions:

1 - noticed the STI has short shift gears, does the wrx have this (although in 5 speed) and how do people find it versus a non-short shift gearbox for day to day driving?

2 - with the PPP, since the car is kicking out more power does it use more fuel? ignore the fact that the driver will probably boot it more lol

3 - Milage, is it worth me going for something less than 50K or over 50K providing the major £800 service has been carried out? might seem like a daft question but if theres nothing that tends to go on the car besides what is changed in the 50K service then i may as well go for one over 50K.

4 - Private or trade? is it worth me paying higher prices at a garage for piece of mind or are these cars generally well looked after unless strikingly obvious?

I realise i've posted a few questions on cost so far, which may seem a daft thing to ask considering the nature of the car but its always good to plan ahead and double check (i.e someone confirmed my 20mpg thoughts earlier)

    Cheers lads,

    Reevo

U mention there aint a blue STI interior in the GB270, mine has the branded alcantara and leather seats and i think its much nicer than the blue interior tbh.

Definately try and buy private but check the car in depth and if in doubt get an independent inspection and if possible try and buy one from a member on here or the like, usually much better cared for.

Im sure the GB270 has the short shift gearbox albeit a 5 speed and i find it great as a daily driver, i also have the PPP but mine also has been modified with a bigger turbo etc and a remap and is closer to 370bhp and as ive said i find the fuel more than acceptable, its roughly the same as my last GB270 which was standard.

As for mileage i tend to try and get a lower mileage example with great history rather than higher mileage with good history, remember its a buyers market at the moment, theres some crackers out there to be had but there are some great higher mileage examples which run like brand new.

All in all, whether trade or private, make sure u give the car a good long test drive and a good look over.

  4. dear all

running my darlin on shell optimax and all seems well . however had heard reports of people using octane boost , anyone care to comment on subject , and any difference it makes

    cheers andy

From what im led to believe Octane Booster raises the RON level of the fuel u put in so in effect you can put in normal unleaded and with the booster u can raise that to the same RON as V Power or the like.

Ive never used it but have heard people talking about it.

  5. Hi All,

New on here so thought I'd give everyone a shout :D

Looking to buy a 2006/7 STI (Hawkeye) and had some questions which hopefully you guys can answer:

1 - Are there any common faults with the STI? More specifically is there anything i should look out for when buying one.

2 - Leading on from q1 are these cars mechanically reliable? (assuming all servicing is carried out on time etc)

3 - how often does everyone replace tyres and do all 4 wear evenly due to the AWD?

4 - not too important but what MPG is everyone getting?

5 - noticed the factory sound system appears to have a tape player, are they crap in general, loudness etc? (be honest)

6 - looked at Graham Walker but in my opinion they were a little over priced and i've also read another topic on here about poor aftercare from them. Any other views would be appreciated.

7 - Can anyone reccomend a Subaru specialist near Blackburn, Lancashire?

8 - Fuel/tax/insurance aside, whats the cost of running these cars per year? (i.e do they need an oil transplant every 5 feet etc).

To give you some background I've owned a Corsa VXR for the past 3 years and I'm coming up on 25 so insurance drops quite a bit as well as 7 years NCB. I'll be looking to trade my corsa in as a private buy seems to be out of the question with this new insurance law.

Sorry for all the questions, seemed to make more sense asking you guys since you own and drive Subaru's you'l be the experts i hope lol!! :Scottish-flag::English-flag:

    Thanks,

    Reevo

Hi mate, does it have to be an STI?

If not then why not look at a GB270, limited edition and although its a WRX its a better all round day to day car, having said that if u would b modding it then best to get an STI, its a better base to start with if modding.

As said above the rear struts are a common problem, my back 2 were replaced just before i bought it and i no of a few others with the same problem, check them when buying.

Insurance wise, ive just renewed mine, got it for £619 and im 26 with 7 years NCB, im with Sainsburys this year, i drive HGVs for a living so dont know if that helps.

Ive just renewed discs and pads all round for roughly £400 and im getting 4 new tyres this week at a cost of around £350, they are Falken FK452s, a lot of people on here have them and they get good reviews for the price.

Ive also had a Corsa VXR mate and you will find a big difference, much better car to drive and in my eyes much more reliable, this is my 3rd Subaru (P1 and 2 GB270s) and never had any probs with any of them.

On the fuel point, i get about 260 miles to a tank and i always use V Power so works out at roughly £60-70 a tank.

  6. Having read your good opinions regarding Falken FK452s, I'm having a full set fitted to our Honda Accord 2.4ivtec and if happy with them, I will consider fitting to our Impreza. The Falkens appear to be a bargain and that's probably why I haven't considered them in the past.

    .

Just an update on the Falkens mate, my mate has now had them for almost a week and is very happy with them, says he would not hesitate to use them again, in fact his other subaru needs tyres soon and he is getting them for it also.

  7. Yes mate, another vote for Duncan at Hypertech in Bonnybridge.

Just another suggestion, my mate who has an STI took his to Hunters at Linlithgow for a service and MOT, said theres a guy working in the garage that used to work for Grieves so they get him to do the Scoobies that come in, never been there myself mate so dont know, just a suggestion.

  8. Hey Rab! Yeah the Mrs is loving it lol, so thats half the battle already. How long till you pick up yours now? Or still no word from DVLA?

Those alloys are lovely! Dunno if I can justify spending that sorta money the now though, since I wanna get the handling and braking sorted on the hatch first.

Hey Jamie, nah never bought it from Ian Grieve although I did look at a few in there. Was mainly dealing with Robert and Gav, and I cannot fault the service each time!

Yeah was shocked at the price of the Rally Armour ones to be honest, but I've heard that they are the best qaulity so I dont mind paying it.

Mods wise it'll take a good while to sort the car out but the plans are window tints, rear anti roll bar, anti lift kit and a fast road setup. Other exterior mods are the HT Auto's front splitter, rear diffuser and possibly the side lips from HT Auto's. Will see how Laura feels about an exhaust later on though lol!

Whats your registration mate, I'll look out for you! Mine is AU08 CUO, give us a wave if you see me about!

Yeah get on with Gav quite well, ive had a couple of cars off them and cant fault the service either.

Haha yes mate ull like the noise a blitz exhaust can give the car, just fitted a nur spec r to mine last month and i love the sound, uve got quite a few mods planned there mate, mind put pics up as u get each done.

My reg is a private one: J60 LLO.

Will keep an eye out for u mate.

  9. I had the Avon ZV5s before but will never use Avon again - terrible in the wet or going round corners fast, unsure what the ZZ5s will be like but they would need to be a quantum leap on to be worthwhile.

I have just replaced my tyres with Toyo Proxes which I got for £103 a piece!! They are a very comforting tyre to drive on for my style - very sure footed if a bit noisy - but not as noisy as the exhaust!!

Where did u get the Toyos from at that price and what size r your tyres?

  10. should be the same for both, gb270 is still 5x100 pcd

got to admit ive always been a fan of the gb270 wheels - have you considered changing the colour of them? how about gunmetal or bronze or im sure ive seen a set in black with a blue stripe round the edge

I do like them but they are murder to clean, takes ages! lol.

Someone said they think a gb270 was 5x114 but thts good if its 5x100.

  11. Hi Jamie,

Our hawkeye has Prodrive PFF7s - 18 x 8J ET51 (ET able to cope with big Brembos or the like). Personally, I think the PFFs particularly suit any new age and of course, they are light and very strong. However, now becoming very difficult to source. I guess the GB270 will need 5x100. No doubt others will confirm.

Thanks for the pic mate, yeah ive seen them on the WR1s and like them also but like uve said they are getting difficult to source.

  12. Hey guys, im thinking of changing the standard GB270 alloys for some new ones and was wondering what people think are best looking for a hawkeye, maybe pics with some if possible?

Ive been thinking about Rota Grid Drifts but know these are expensive, also seen BBS CH as well.

Could someone also give me the wheel dimensions, i lknow they are 18"x8.5", someone said ET44, no idea about that and is it 5x100 or 5x114?

    Thanks in advance guys.

    Jamie.

  13. Just to let you know guys that Stuart picked the car up today, he asked me to post up letting you know and he will post later on, he is loving the car so far, told him that it would be in a different league to his old escort! lol.

Ive got a sneeky feeling he wont be the owner of any other make of car for a while, ive managed to make him a subaru convert!!! :smiley-taunt014:

  14. Im the new owners cousin, ive been on here for a while, thats me standing beside the car in the first pic, the car does look in very good condition, guy must have looked after it well, i did say to u stuart that it had bigger alloys on it, hopefully u guys will b seeing both of us at meets soon.

  15. Kwik Fit won't do it unless they supply the parts. I've tried them before and that was the answer. They didn't want anyone claiming they'd fitted crap, etc. Made me laugh cos of course they only fit top spec stuff when they do a job.

A local independant is your best bet. The price from Hypertech is what i paid last week to get the new Godspeed kit fitted all round on mine while it was in for a servicing.

Ok thanks for that info mate, saves me a phone call! :D

ps whats the Godspeed brakes like? Ive heard some bad things about them, discs warping etc

  16. Well the fronts are easy mate. The rear ones on mine were a bit more tricky.

I know my mate has just had a price of someone around here and they are doing it for £80 cash.

Have you tried your local Kwik Fit, ATS or HiQ. Some of these places can be cheap sometimes.

Offer them pound notes and that will save you a little bit.

Yeah i may ring Kwik Fit etc tomorrow just to see, yeah try get rid of the VAT

    Cheers
